Wow, this is one nice offering from Capital, my first time trying them. Flavors a big with a robust body. Lots of maltiness in here with underlying sweetness but not really any residual sugars. Caramel is dominant but there's chocolate in there, some vanilla, some dark spices, and then a dryness in the finish. Alcohol is warming and has a cameo in the body of this beer. Robust yet smooth. Easy drinking, very enjoyable. I want this all winter long. Thanks Craig.

Appearance: Pours a clear, but deep mahogany, brown color with a strong tan head.

Aroma: Strong aromas of brown bread, smooth caramel, chocolate, toffee. Some coffee cake and maple syrup.

Flavor: Strong flavors of brown bread, caramel, maple syrup and toffee. Smooth and lightly sweet.

Feel: Medium to lighter body than expected. Lower carbonation. A lightly sweet mouthfeel that is relatively light and clean.

Overall: A nice doppelbock here. Nice appearance, aroma, flavors. Wish it had a bit more of a full body though. Sort of lacking on the body and so the flavors fade quickly. Not to say it's a bad doppelbock, but based on some of the previous reviews I'd like to see a little bit more. Overall, drinks nicely, but I probably won't hunt it down to find it. (Rating: 3.90)

This beer has a short shelve life.
Flavor: heavy toasted bread, almost roasty. hints of toffee/caramel, micro amount of dark fruit/plum and maybe chocolate. Very smooth and easy drinking consider the abv and rather strong flavor. Abv is very well hidden . It's sweet but not cloyingly sweet. rather straight line flavor wise. nice beer, rather old school maybe but that's ok 4.09/5

12oz bottle. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a nice sized, brown head of foam. It smelled of chocolate, caramel malt and toffee. Nice dried dark fruit flavor with toffee, caramel and chocolate.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: rich amber-brown hue with a clear body and a finger of compact, frothy tan foam. Very attractive indeed.

Smell: very malty with a bready sweetness and a date-like fruity character. I like it.

Taste: bready, biscuity, a little bit sweet; there's almost a cola/kvass feel to this guy, it's so bready. I don't dislike it at all; it's very dopplebock-ey, if a little bit sweet for my taste.

Mouthfeel: medium-rich body with a low level of carbonation and a decent creaminess.

Overall: this beer is darn good, and definitely a good example of the style, if not exactly to my palate. But nice indeed!

Dark, brownish-orange body; relatively thin yet lasting head. Deep dark, roasted grain aroma; toffee; nuts. Rich, heavy sweetness in the taste; many similarities with the smell; cocoa and bitter chocolate. Heavy, smooth body; luscious on the palate.

This is one fine doppelbock. The flavors and feel come across as bold and decadent and very satisfying.

12oz bottle courtesy of the generosity of @Ri0. Before I received his BIF box, I’d not heard of Capital brewing at all. I’m always happy to try an American doppelbock, and think it’s a criminally neglected style among American brewers, but couldn’t they have come up with a better name than Dark Doppelbock? Sounds like something crafted by the Department of Redundancy Department. Well, I guess that lack of a catchy name means this beer will live or die by how it tastes, which is really how it should be, after all.

Poured into a Hofbrauhaus weizen glass (one better suited, perhaps, to a larger size bottle than 12oz – really need to find some that are somewhat smaller), this was a dark, rubyish, mahogany color that took on an almost crimson color when held up to light. There was a big, creamy-looking beige head that took it’s time settling.

The nose was dominated by banana-y cloves and roasty dark malts, with the cloves taking the lead. Slightly coppery aroma as well. As it warms, things get a little fruity, not unlike apples.

The taste is sweeter than I expected, and less complex than most doppelbocks I’ve had, but is still a treat to drink. There’s a fair amount of brown sugary sweetness, and some toffeeish flavors. As it warms, a little bit of booziness creeps in. The finish is slightly bitter.

Fairly light bodied for a doppelbock. Creamy, coating mouthfeel.

Definitely different when compared to most doppelbocks I’ve had. Lighter and sweeter, with less of a dark fruit flavor than usual, but very tasty. It actually reminds me as much of a dunkelweizen (another of my favorite German styles) as a doppelbock. Very glad to have had this unique beer. Thanks, Ri0!
