Back for a reprise in the Capital Square series. The last time this was brewed, I was sure Kirby had duplicated the Aventinus recipe to a T. My first sample in many years...

8.0% ABV on the new label.

A -- Hazy amber/apricot with a very dense, light tan head.

S -- When I capped this beer I could smell bubblegum at arm's length! Bubblegum, peach, mild clove, fresh yeast character.

T -- Breadiness up front blend into tart citrus fruits and spicy esters, finishing with rich malt character and some peppery spiciness from alcohol. In a word, wow.

M -- Very soft mouthfeel with a medium to medium heavy body. Maybe slightly hot from alcohol, but not at all solvent-like.

D -- While very high in ABV, this beer just invites you back again and again to experience the flavors. A very outstanding brew that holds the definition of the style to the highest standard.

This beer looks like syrup when youre pouring it out. Its a very dark caramel color, small white head doesnt really last long. Scent is great, think caramel malts, some wheat notes, almost a whiff of booze. The taste has me hooowling at the moon. Nice thick dose of malt infused with wheat undertones. A bit of spice from the well blended alcohol. Mouth is fairly acidic, thin to medium. I like it.

Poured a hazy orange-copper color with just a little bit of head on it. Nice aroma - sweet, citrus notes. Taste is very good. Heavy citrus with a bit of an aftertaste. Very light mouthfeel considering this is 8%. No alcohol taste at all. This beer is very drinkable despite the above average ABV. I'll definitely be looking for this again.

Pours a headless, glumpy, yeast-laden orange. Outrageous nose of banana pound cake covered in freshly cracked blacked pepper. Immediate sweetness is quelled by a dose of hops for a truly balanced, tasty and satisfying Weizenbock that warms a body quite nicely. Could stand a bit more carbonation, but a pleasure to drink nonetheless.

Kirby's big beers tend to age well, and that was certainly true of this one. Not sure what year this was, but it's a minimum of three years old, probably more.

Aroma: Moderate banana nose, a slight clove/phenol note, malt evident, bready, some alcohol

Appearance: Brilliantly clear, amber colour, almost no head retention (probably to be expected with a big beer)

Flavour: Nice balance of big malt, weizen character, alcohol, and more malt. Did I happen to mention the malt and alcohol? ;-) Some notes of raisin and plum. Despite the age, no obvious signs of oxidation.

Mouthfeel: Very warming, medium-low carbonation, smooth despite the alcohol--not at all "hot"

Overall drinkability: A wonderful beer for the snows of early April (or, really, almost any time). Warming and "dangerously drinkable, nicely mellowed with age.

Beer at 1:30 PM, why not? Thanks Ian. Twist off, eh?!

A: Cloudy copper tinged amber. Big soapy off white head with great retention and scattered lacing.

S: Sweet bready malt base with prominent banana esters and evident clove-like phenols. Dark fruit is diffident, with light notes of plum, date, and fig, but mostly plum. Outstanding aroma.

T: Sweet baked bread, wheat, and slightly spicy cloves. Banana is powerful, with plum trailing and even lighter notes of prune. Alcohol is noticeable but fits well with the other flavors. The finish is of rich and complex bready malt, banana, and dark fruits, with alcohol warming.

M: Light full bodied with an evident creaminess and noticeable warming in the sticky finish.

Overall: A well done example of a classic German style. Recommended if you like Weizenbocks.

Hazy, cloudy dark gold with a peachy tone in color, thin white head of tight foam, faded fast, leaves some stringy lace. Smell is faintly sweet, a bit of wheat, lemon, orange, and peach with a light touch of spice. Taste is great of lemon and orange and incredibly thick and chewy, excellent sweet tartness and citrusy sourness, solid sweet wheat, but all mellowed down and easy to handle. Feel is pretty full and has a very nice creamy smoothness with a slight tart hold in the middle and then has this strange little sourness left on the lips like I had just bit into a orange with the peel still on. This is awesome stuff, I think I'll have another.

This beer is about as close to orange as you can get. A minimal head recedes to nothing in seconds. Really nice blend of banana, clove and sweet malt on the nose. First off, I notice the huge sweetness, teetering on cloying, and nice malt presence on the tongue. Then I start to pick up some weizen characteristics, cloves and pepper spicing, and some slight vanilla and banana tones. Mouthfeel is on the low side of the carbonation spectrum and a bit syrupy. Not out of the norm for this style however. Overall, this is a very tasty and enjoyable brew. Wouldn't want to can a sixer of this however. Not quite up to the high bar that Aventinus sets, but the next closest one that I've had.

Throws a dusty brown-peach glass with a thinnish tan head, with fair retention.
Bombards the nose with banana bread notes. Clove spiciness lurks as well.
Flavor starts with some sour apple notes. Switches to a banana sweetness. Spices rush in next. Vanilla, clove and maybe ginger. Malts then assert themselves with sweet,lush carmel hues. Finishes yeasty sour and somewhat alcoholic.
Fairly thick bodied. A summertime sipper. And a very unique and tasty one at that.

A: nice, cloudy (yeast) light brown-amber color
S: good, traditional cloves and bananas
T: very true-to-type, well-balanced, traditional, great malt and banana/clove taste, alcohol presence but not overpowering, very well made, most American breweries don't do justice to weiss biers -- this one does
M: creamy with good malt backbone and spiciness from yeast
D: good but for a weizenbock it's not a quaffer

A - Slightly hazy orange, amber with a thin white head that sticks around.

S - Sweet banana, clove, pepper, wheat malt in the background.

T - Strong banana and clove with bready malts. Slightly yeasty with some sweet caramel as it warms.

M - Medium body with a slight slickness and smooth, soft creaminess.

D - The alcohol is hidden. Strong banana and clove but a pretty smooth Weizenbock.

Poured into a Weihenstephaner weizen glass

Capital's Weizen Doppelbock, currently pat of their Square Series, is a solid version of the style, focusing on balance between light and dark malts along with expected, intensified banana and apple pie spice aromas and flavors. This should be a go-to beer for fans of the style, with its generally well-hidden alcohol and pleasant flavors/aromas.

From the bottle, pours a voluminous head (>3cm) of tiny, soft-looking bubbles, off-white in color. Gradually reduces to a thin cap atop the beer, probably about 0.5cm. Leaves very modest amounts of lacing. Body is a dark copper color, components of brown, orange, and yellow. In light, this is a hazy, dull orange color with yellowish highlights. Sluggish carbonation is visible. Overall, the beer gives the impression that it is a "big" wheat beer: ethanol cuts the head, the carbonation is slower in a thicker body, the color is deep and rich.

Aroma is quite good, full of hearty banana esters, wheat malt and bread crust, a bit of caramel, diacetyl (butterscotch), and very mild nuttiness. Probably one of my favorite aromas in a weizenbock.

Taste opens with bread crust flavors along with some toasted malt components. Sweet and syrupy caramel flavors quickly materialize, as do rich banana esters and pie spices. Continues sliding across the palate giving off bready, syrupy caramel, and banana flavors with a bit of pie spice bite. Slight ethanol flavor in the back of the throat/tongue, only noticeable as beer warms. Aftertaste is of banana esters and some caramelized malts, but also with a bit of cloying sweetness.

Beer is medium to medium-heavy bodied with somewhat low carbonation. Resultant mouthfeel is fairly thick, chewy. Ethanol can be felt in the back of the throat/tongue, ever so slightly.

12oz single, Star. nice to see this one back from the dead

appearance: capital square series - pours into a delirium chalice - very cloudy copper body, decent amount of yeast present, beige rin with webbed lacing

smell: banana, clove, sweet fruits, bready and yeasty, buttery

taste: really like weizenbocks - capital is very upfront with banana and clove. Sweet red fruits mix and create a yeast-smoothie beverage. lots of yeast, grassy hops, very sweet. This is a pretty nice beer, but i like the dane weizenbock a little better. Booze comes through pleasantly in the finish

Appearance-Pale copper color with some haze. Moderate white head with fine bubbles, moderate retention, and some lacing.

Aroma-Huge ester bouquet of banana and bubble gum with some light plum esters in the background. Clove phenolics also make an appearance, though aren't as prominent as the fruity esters in this example. A little bit of spritzy, spicy wheat is evident and some caramel shows up near the end, but the fruit/spice aromas trump everything else here. No hops apparent.

Flavor-Tastes like an amped up hefeweizen.Bubble gum and banan flavors are balanced by clove spiciness up front. Like the aroma, there are also some darker fruit notes here, perhaps plums or prunes, but these are quite secondary. Some spicy, grainy wheat shows in the finish, as does a smooth alcohol flavor. The alcohol content is quite evident, but pleasantly so, though as it warms, the alcohol becomes a little more pronounced, and a little less enjoyable.

Mouthfeel-Medium body. High carbonation, verging on effervescent. Moderate alcohol warming. Alcohol is almost a bit sticky around the edges, but is not harsh or hot.

This beer packs a ton of aroma and flavor, but the high carbonation washes it right off your tongue, and the alcohol dries out the finish, making it very easy to drink. Nonetheless, I wouldn't want to drink a ton of these in one sitting.

t: sweet wheat and caramelized malt form a rich base, lots of ripe banana and clove, sugar cookie, grassy hops with a spicy-sweet finish, great

d: easy for the abv, a very enjoyable weizenbock

Another dandy from Capital...cloudy orange color....nose is typical weizen...I get heavy cloves and banana's....low carbonation....a bit syrupy...slick...sweet flavor...bananna's...also I get some cinaman...some might find this a little oversweet, but I like it...not in aventius's class but worth seeking out...

Update-2003 version...more of a sweet/sour flavor...very yeasty....interesting but considerably different in flavor than Aventinus..one six-packk is enough of this for one year...

Appearance: Murky, cloudy orange, good head though.

Smell: Yeasty, some bananas, spices.

Taste: Sweet, mild banana bread flavor, a little more lemon flavor than expected.

Drinkability: A nice treat for after dinner, not a session beer.

Finally got to try this one after seeing it on this site for years. It's a pretty good weizenbock but could use a little less lemon and a little more banana. Worth a try.

Hazy, orangey color, spidery head settles into patches of light foam. Sweet syrup aroma. Full bodied impression. Pepppery taste at first with denser fruit malts that combine with the spice. Continues in body until swallow, almost like a sweet gravy. More strident lemon notes than Aventinus. Fits Dopplebock category in its coating properties, slight alcohol warmth, and strong malt properties. Not complex, what you taste initially is what persists. A little too cloying for me to give a high drinkability score. Interesting brew.

Wow, 7+ years since it was last brewed... revived in the Capital Square series 4 packs.

When opened there was a nice whiff of sweet banana, but in the glass it's a bit more phenolic, pepper and clove. Spicy gingerbread. Murky caramel orange, nearly opaque with the yeast poured in. Sturdy foam cap, good retention, some spotty soapy lacing sticks inside the pint glass.

Banana, clove, light citrus, somewhat bready with a light medicinal note. Creamy feel, very smooth, lightly spicy. A nice Weizenbock for chilly fall weather.

On tap @ the Capital Brewing (Madison, WI) on 8/13/10. Served in a clear plastic cup.

Pours a deep burnt orange, with thin head of off-white foam. Good retention on this, leaving back thick creamy lacing. The aroma is crisp and tangy in the nose with notes of wheat, orange zest, ripe banana, bubblegum and some spicy clove which really delivers some zing here. Light warmth sits underneath as well, adding some thickness to this in the nostrils.

The taste has a sweet tang to it on the palate, with notes of toasted wheat, caramel, fruity flavors of orange and banana, and a spicy kick in the back from the clove. A deep earthy bitterness is present, lingering in the finish with spice and leftover tangy notes. The mouthfeel is full bodied with a big crisp chewiness to it but still stays pretty darn smooth feeling for such a hefty beer. There's definitely some warmth in the body but this is staying surprisingly drinkable.

This was interesting but still tasty, with a lot of traditional Weizenbock character to it but there was also a good bit of thicker sweetness here that reminded me of a Bock at times. Either way, the body on this was still very smooth and drinkable and I think that you could get in trouble with this one quick after a few.

12 oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass. 8.0% ABV, 1470 on the neck.

A - A thick three-finger, bone-colored head rises from a moderate pour to lower slowly while leaving a nice veil of lace on the glass. The color is between a standard bock and a weiss. Hazed over and amber golden with straw yellow highlights.

S - Even with the twist of the cap, it's got a strong banana-weiss nose from the yeast. Hints of clove, clay, and white pepper come from the yeast esters as well. Wheat is secondary but still strong and the maltiness falls to the background, barely even present beside the banana. Good, but two much weiss, not enough bock.

T - The blend of strong bock malts and the German yeast strain doesn't really impress. While it's good, it feels like a forced mash-up of strong banana and hints of yeast, clove, and clay with a lightly toasted amber malt backing. I'll give it that the alcohol doesn't show through at all though.

M - Moderate carbonation provides a tickle to the finish while the body is medium and fairly smooth. A little crisp to the finish, the banana and spice lingers while the softness pulls through.

D - I'm constantly burping up banana Runts! Besides that (and I love banana Runts, don't get me wrong) its decent. The dopplebock is lost though. It just seems like a strong weissbier.
