Cloudy dark brown with a finger of tan foam. Cocoa, euro malt, and wheat in nose, simple. Taste has big bubblegum added with the malt being very sweet and of the cheaper euro variety, yet somehow the end is really good with wheat, cocoa, dark fruit and a sweeter biscuit note. What a turn of events! Light thin body is a let down, no depth either.

I got a can of this beer from the 2023 Costco Beer advent calendar pack as the December 18th offering. It poured a hazy dark amber with off white ring head that is not leaving much lace. The scent had subtle cocoa notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with semi sweet dark chocolate malt base with crisp grain presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a great beer.

KALEA Brewer's Advent Calendar 2023 Day 16
Lots of sediment, really a bummer. I like to swirl up the last bit of the can to all the goodness in my glass but that is not advisable with this beer.

Nice, but not masterful.
While I've had only a dozen dunkleweizen, most have been from the Bavarian masters. Kuchlbauer's shows resemblance, but not mastery.
Alte Liebe Looks well above average, nice foam and initial clarity in the body. Smells seem yeasty, banana nut with minor dark fruit. Tastes follow well enough, but "modest" comes to mind. Sits well in my mouth, soft yet enough cleansing bubbles. Thanks to StonedTrippin' for the warning about the sediment in the can. (Bro, you do the best reconnaissance .)
I never would have enjoyed a Kuchlbauer nor learned about them had it not been for Costco distributing the Kalea Advent Calendar. This 9 generation family brewery keeps the Bavarian brewing tradition going strong and wide. Midway between Bavaira's two large cities (Nuremberg being a distance second), Kuchlbauer is a key part of its town; promoting brewery tours and Christmas and, I presumer, other seasonal markets for tourists. For that culture and commerce nexus, I give them pretty good Overall Hugs. Prost !

in a can from the costco advent pack, unique beer, but poorly refined in this format or at least for this collection, the bottom inch of the can is full of coagulated sediment, really the first of these cans over two years to have this much sediment in it, and it ruins the bottom little bit of my glass, but the start is plenty promising and despite the same freshness issues most of these have had, its a neat beer from a brewery i know next to nothing about. deep copper to light brown in color with a little dullness to it but a lasting inch of active khaki foam. the aroma here is yeast driven on top of nutty baked type european malt character, things like cooked banana and bran muffin come to mind, graham cracker, toffee, raisin, and bread yeast. the flavor has a lot of these elements too, subtle citrus peel in the yeast esters, clove and maple giving it a decidedly autumnal vibe, and there is some residual sugar extending it. puffy feeling from the obviously high proportion of wheat malt, toasted and cooked to me, trace smoke, fig, and almond. its oxidized for sure and has a cardboard thing, but i can look past it given the circumstances. this is nice for fall, smooth and long but also well carbonated and if a little better refined, would be real drinkable even with some late sweetness. cool yeast profile, old worldy and german and rustic in a good way. fun one for this time of year and i appreciate the style diversity in the advent pack this year.

Weissbierbrauerei Kuchlbauer "Alte Liebe Dunkle Weisse"
50 cl can coded "EXP 2025/03 09:26 0206MU". Sampled on 23 October 2023
Notes via stream of consciousness: As expected, the body is a very hazy brown beneath a rocky head of tan foam. The nose offers a little bit of cocoaish malt but no yeastiness. The taste, however, follows through with the cocoaish malt and adds in some soft clove and dull apple. There might be some banana in there but I'm not finding it. The malt is a touch caramelish and nutty as well. A moderate bitterness balances it nicely and it finishes dry and refreshing. The body is medium leaning towards medium-light, and it's crisp with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation. It's a decent beer overall, offering both flavor and drinkability.

A dunkel weisse is just a dark weizen, not like a weizenbock, just telling you this because I think I had my expectations a bit too high. I had a good weizenbock just recently but this one was kind if like a mix between a dark lager and a light wheat beer. The good thing though is that it was not that strong at least what the yeast is concerned, nothing overwhelming, just okay. It was easy to drink and all good but nothing to write home about. Luckily it was not too caramel malty either, not too bitter, just a great golden middle. Was alright.
