500ml bottle from Allison Arms (£4.60):
Fairly dark amber for the style with a 2 cm white head that covers the surface well but could have had slightly better retention. Bananas & pale wheat notes with some cloves & slightly floral notes but overall its pretty standard. The taste is similar with lots of banana & cloves, some bubblegum type flavours & wheat with some pale malts following. It's slightly floral, a hint of spice & good balance with good carbonation too; definitely an improvement on the nose with a bit of a tang towards the end too.

Had this on tap at Gasthof Adler in Bad Wörishofen. Many people would confuse this for a dark Hefeweizen, however in the case of Unertl, their regular Hefeweizen is just darker than most others. Which brings me to one of my most favorite aspects of this beer - it is a very nice Weizen (Weissbier as I prefer to call them), with the nice clove and banana flavors, plus it has a nice malty note, as well. One of my favorite Weissbier. Too bad we can't find this in the US, so I have to drink it on my trips to Bavaria.

This beer violently gushed at me after sitting in the fridge undisturbed for a week or so. However it did not show any obvious signs of infection and as it it was bottle conditioned could be just overcarbonated.
Smell was a bit burned and then some banana that was more pleasant. maybe a bit plastic but that could be imagination.
Taste was pleasant enough typical Dunkelweizen
Lots of carbonation obviously, not watery.
Quite OK for an initially suspicious looking beer

This dunkel pours a fairly dark reddish orange color with a huge, foamy, white head. The smell is fairly typical of a dunkel or a hefe for that matter: banana, wheat, spices, etc. The flavor is more subdued then most wheat beers that I’ve tried. All the right flavors are there (see the smell portion), but it seems a little watered down. The finish is somewhat more bitter then the average dunkel, which seems a little out of place as well. It’s fairly refreshing, but really nothing special. I have had worse, but I have definitely had a lot better and in Germany, the land where great wheat beers are made, this is just sub-par.
