Incredibly dark. I don't know why this isn't called a dunkelweiss. Hazel wood brown. Very carbonated, huge head. Some sediment sitting on the head like chocolate powder.

Yeasty but also heavy smell. Sweet like a dunkel hefe weiss.

Very very smooth, not a heavy flavor. Full bodied. Barely sour, but in a lemony sort of way, not bad. Barely tastes like a hefeweisen. But it's very nice.

I love how smooth this beer is. Very easy to drink. And surprisingly not too much of a carbonation sting.

Quite a nice beer, although very different from most hefeweisens. It must be a dunkelweiss.

Review #2 Bottle

A: Root beer candy brown with a interesting contoured head composed of small bubbles. Small jets of rising carbonation. 4

S: Vanilla ice cream, banana, yeast, glass cleaner, toasty cream. Even chicken. 4.5

T: Nutty, no heavier than "light" hefeweizens. Very slight tartness in the end. Lemon, toasted malt. 4.5

M: Smooth, the motion of the carbonation creates a sort of thickness to it, but i would consider it more of a medium than a heavy body. Barely astringent. 4

O: Very good beer. particularly good fresh. 4.5

Although some may consider this a dunkleweiss, Unertl is actually an original style weissbier, which is a little darker than a hellesweizen and not as chocolatey as a dunkel. Natural, local spring water forms the base for a 70 percent malted wheat grist bill, well above a typical weiss concentration. A warmer temperature, top fermentation takes place in traditional, open containers using a special flocculent yeast strain developed by the family, and a small percentage of chocolate malt gives this original its deep amber color. Natural yeast sediment forms in the container due to bottle or cask conditioning, which can sometimes be a little chunky.

Full, yet soft, with a rounded body, you'll find notes of almond, soft banana, and clove. The head is creamy and generous with substantial mouth-feel. The richness of the yeast is evidenced by a silky glass cling and the finish is sweet and clean. In fact, the glass is absolutely filthy with yeast by the time you're done--very rich in vitamin B12 and protein. Complex and subtle, it's not only refreshing but has body enough that it never becomes too sweet.

This beer is quite simply one of the finest in the world of any variety.

While I first sampled this beer in Germany nearly 15 years ago, I'm thrilled that it's recently become available in the U.S. I've also noted that several reviewers have this beer confused with Unertl Muhldorf, which is a completely separate brewery and product.

picked this up at the insistence of some beer distributor type stalking the aisle with the beer buyer at my local Whole Foods

a: big foamy tan head fills the glass and steadily falls back to a decent coating that eventually goes completely dead, the beer itself a murky brown in color

s: wheat base with a heavy dose of caramelized malt bringing some aromas of brown sugar, dark breads, and cocoa, mild clove and banana, benign hops, plum, pretty nice

m: carbonation around medium-high, a touch spritzy, lighter in body but with a nice roundness added by the dark barleys employed

t: wheat and deeply caramelized malt create a flavorful but not very heavy body, brown sugar, dark bread, mild hops, straightforward yeast flavor

d: pretty easy, lots of flavor for the abv

This beer has a great and strong Weiss beer aroma. Every characteristic of a Weiss is in it. There is a lot banana and peppery clove. There was only about a finger and a half of fizzy off white head with no retain ability. It has ruddy brown body that I was not overly fond of. It was just a bit odd. The flavor starts off great and it has a fresh flavor but you can’t use this beer as a sipper it gets a plastic like taste as it sits. For the most part it once again has great Weiss profile clove, pepper and a bit of tropical fruit. It was very fizzy and a bit thin in the mouthfeel.

Poured from a .5l bottle into a 20oz imperial pint. Thanks to Iain for the hook up!

A: Pours a crystal clear dark copper-caramel color. Seems dark for a Hefe Weizen. Smooth, creamy, one-finger head that lasts forever. Active carbonation.

S: Mild banana and clove, spicy wheat, and a fruity tang that resembles lemon.

T: See above. Plus a nice toasted malt flavor.

M: Quite spicy on the tongue. Due to both the spicy wheat and the carbonation. Citrus quality through the finish.

D: One of the more subdued Hefe's I've had. Despite that, this is a very refreshing beer that keeps tingling the tongue long after the mouthfull has been swallowed.

This beer pours a dark orange, almost brown beer with a hige head that stays on the entire beer.

Smell is amazing, there is a smokiness in there which I never smelled in a Weizen. Other than that there are the usual yeasty phenolic notes with ripe bananas and strong clove.

Taste is smoky, reminds me of some sausages and has a nice husky malt taste. The wheat give the beer a nice grainy taste. The obvious ripe banana and clove are also present, with the clove being quite strong. The body is thin and make my mouth dry, it feels adstringent on the tongue.

500 ml bottle, bought in Germany. ABV is 4.9%. Not to be confused with Unertl Mühldorfer Weissbier (different brewery, different town). Hazy orange-brownish colour, huge off-white head. Lovely aroma of ripe fruits with vinous notes, oak, bananas and cloves. Flavour is moderately acidic and lemony, with faint notes of wood, sour dough bread and cloves. Light bodied. Like most weissbiers a relatively short aftertaste. I drank it slightly too warm, must be very refreshing when colder, esp. on a fine summer’s day.

Pours a muddy brown, hazy color with a big bubbly white head and some lacing. Aroma is mild, kind of like a more malty hefeweizen.

Taste is a bit malty but with some hefe like qualities, bananas, cloves wheat bitterness.

Mouthfeel is average, not as sharp as a hefe but rich enough and not watery.

Drinkability is ok. Not that remarkable a beer.

The beer pours unusually dark for Hefeweizen, almost copper with rather thin tan head and patchy lacing. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel, some fruity esters, mostly of dark fruit.

Taste is wheat malt, caramel, vanilla, banana with medium-dry and slightly sourish finish, bits of yeast can be felt in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is ligh-medium with prickly carbonation.

Overall, the beer did not seem to be very typical Hefe. The more I drank it, the more I enjoyed it; it is definitely worth trying.

A- light brown, almost looks like that of the root beer gummy candies, white head raises fast on the poor then dies down to a thin layer that stay through the drink

S- earthy roots and spice, floral, vanilla, banana, caramel. sweet hops

T- very sweet and light, there is banana and caramel like the smell

M- VERY smooth and light body with pretty much no carbonation feel

D- This is a great easy to drink beer for any time of the year or day. Would be a great way to introduce new drinkers to a variety

BB 30-03-06. Nice ans lasting head and a great brown beercollor and brown yeast soon after adding it gets even darker remembering more of a dark weizen. Nose shows lots of bannana esters, good chocolate and carramellic sweatnes. Only litle off is the yeasty smell that's also over it but not disturbing that much. Taste is lots of wheatmalts, darkmalt mostly in form of carramalts. Full taste and hardly any sourness and a light bitter aftertaste that again also shows litle yeast. Greatly carbonated and fresh and tasty overall impression. Easy but very enjoyable when drinkable and IMO well worth a try.
