Hazy yellow-orange and a big fluffy white head. Looks like Orval.

The hops pop out floral and fruity. Not as yeast driven as I'm used to in Orval but I'm sure it's fresh on tap at the cafe here. Touch of sweetness to it. Bready. Dry.

Light on body with a nice bitterness.

Wonderful to be ably to try this. Super enjoyable beer.

2010 bottle, consumed in 2014. What a delicious beer. A lighter version of the Orval we all know and love, but with its own complexities.

A: Medium brown, like the hide of a deer. On top stands 2 fingers of cappuccino like head holding great retention. Its cloudy and the carbonation is not visible.

S: Apple sauce, apple candy, creamy.

T: Fresh, so fresh. The taste of apple candy, with almost no sweetness, a slight breadiness, a little sour, hops are fresh and bright almost citrus like as in a much milder version of a west coast ipa’s.

M: Thick body, slight jam and bread (syrupy and bready) medium low carbonation.

O: Drank Dec 6th, 2013 at L’Ange Gardien outside Orval Abbey on site in Belgium. Had with a croquette made of Orval's cheese. Incredibly fresh bready, great balance of sweet and sour, bready and bitter. The last of my Trappist Abbeys in Benelux to visit. Celebrating now having visited all 7 abbeys, 3 of them today! Had on tap.

Had this on tap at the cafe yesterday. What a wonderful day.

This was a nice warm-up for the real thing. Thin mouthfeel and somewhat watery in the taste department, it was still very crisp and fresh. The balance leaned heavily towards bittering hops and didn't have the spice or complexity of its big brother to keep things interesting. I can't help but wonder if the mouthfeel issue could have been solved with a less aggressive pour.

On the plus side it had a beautiful light copper color that just looked fantastic in the light coming in through the window. A two finger head stuck around to the bitter end and left really nice lacing. The presentation and setting were fantastic. You can't beat getting a beer straight from the source.

Definitely glad I got the chance to taste it, but I may skip this one on future trips and have an aged bottle of its big brother instead.

Enjoyed on site at Orval, the version I had was called Orval Vert ('green' or 'young' Orval) and was listed at 4.5% alcohol. Very enjoyable session beer, that went well in a nice day. Not as impressive as its big brother obviously, but still enjoyable. Wish I could get bottles of it.

A big thanks to Paul for bringing this back from Belgium for me! 11.2oz brown glass proprietary bottle with no label nor date. I'm told this bottle is about two months old.

Pours a hazy orange amber with thin crackling white head. Nose has a banana note right up front and then some earthy spice-like aromas.

The palate is radically crisp and very dry. The flavor profile is moderately citrusy with very little malt flavor. Very pale grains it would seem. There seems to be a lot brett character in terms of flavor, but I'm not sure if this actually has brett in it. As the beer warms, the palate is a little less rigid in mouthfeel which is good. The finish is something along the lines of citrus zest with a pleasant astringency, but I can't pinpoint which citrus.

Notes: All told, this is a tasty little beer. I think I prefer it to Orval, but Orval has never been my favorite so that's not really a surprise to me. Happy and grateful to try it!

Pours a bright golden orange with a creamy pillowy off white head. Wonderful orval yeast, plastic and medicinal note, faint spice, juicy lemon and light lime note. Some citrusy orange hops in back. The taste has that somehow pleasant medicinal/plastic orval yeast, extremely unique, light spice to it and a well integrated citrus melody behind. Juicy lemon and light citrus with a touch of bitterness in the finish. Light body and very airy, very dry and gentle carbonation. Very complexy and extremely drinkable, awesome balance and so well integrated. Could drink 10!
