Pours from the bottle a deep brownish red. Smells of toffee, dark fruit, vanilla and bourbon. The taste follows the smell. It's not terribly boozy, but the bourbon really brings out the prunes and plums in the base beer. Very sweet. This is pretty good, and definitely a sipper.

Got in a BIF from jdell15. 12 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours hazy very dark reddish brown color with a small cream colored head with decent retention, that reduce to a ring of lace that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, plum, prune, fig, date, apricot, red apple, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, maple, and brown bread; with lighter notes of molasses, chocolate, peppercorn, leather, tobacco, peat smoke, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of fruity yeast, dark/bready malt, and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of huge raisin, plum, prune, fig, date, apricot, red apple, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, maple, and brown bread; with lighter notes of molasses, chocolate, peppercorn, leather, tobacco, peat smoke, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness. Light herbal/roast bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of dark fruits, apricot, red apple, honey, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, coconut, toasted oak, maple, brown bread, light chocolate/molasses, peppercorn, leather, tobacco, peat smoke, and yeast/oak/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Awesome complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, dark/bready malt, and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great malt/bitter/spiciness balance, and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Slightly increasing dryness from bitter/spiciness. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and lightly slick/syrupy/chalky/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden; a mild warmth with no barrel booziness lingering after the finish. Overall this is an awesome barrel aged scotch ale! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of fruity yeast, dark/bready malt, and bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and dangerously easy to sip on for the big ABV. Very rich and complex, with perfectly balanced flavors. Great barrel presence and integration without the booze. A really enjoyable offering, and spot on style example.

Ruddy brown with a half-finger of sudsy, tan, cola-like head that quickly dissipates into a crown.
Strong, sweet bourbon aroma with toffee and vanilla up front, and some leathery malt and dark fruit behind.
Much less sweet tasting. Must be a fair amount of bittering hops to counteract the bourbon, because while not at an outrageous level, the bitterness does stand out here and it has a somewhat herbal, grassy quality. Beyond that, the base is somewhat leathery, somewhat caramel-like, with flashes of toffee, vanilla and alcohol.
Very thick, chewy, creamy mouthfeel. Decent carbonation.
This is a really solid, but begs comparison to Backwoods Bastard and other champs, and doesn't quite reach that level. It's one of those beers where each of the individual elements is great, but that don't quite work together in perfect harmony.

Anyone call for a massive beer? That's because I have found one! Elk Creek found formidible when they put their popular strong Scottish ale in a bourbon barrel. Why not, the Scottish whisky makers do it all the time!
Bourbon Barrel Mashie pours a handsome but headless garnet hue. Its nonchalant stillness is in drast opposition to its powerful scent- the coconut and vanilla of bourbon whisked in a sweetened base of brown sugar, maple and molasses with the depth of dark, dried fruit precedes the heavily succulent sweetness of toffee and port wine with brown butter and spice cake. -and that just starts the show.
Its unappologetic sweetness tramples the tastebuds with its high culinary but sweet-tooth delight- rife with honey, molasses, brown sugar and maple, its sweetness is such that will hurt those with a teeth sensitivity. But for those who withstand it, the savory taste of deep caramelization and fermentation takes the sweetness to the depths of sherry and port with their umami and almost-teriyaki character. Lightly bittered, the beer's balance largeley comes way of peppercorn, earthen peat and boozy spice.
Full, sugary and off-cloying, the beer's texture is lightly oily like those fine tawny port wines but with a drinkability that puts it more in line with English barleywine. Spicy, sweet and begging for a Churchill cigar, the beer's finish is long, sweet and peppery- a most dessert-like affair.

After another sample, bumping up taste & smell, dropping appearance a little
Pours a chill hazed Hazel brown with a sliver of tan head. Stays effervescent, nice viscosity, minimal head retention & even less lacing
S: Cakeyness, plums & figs; fades over time
T: Follows the nose, a touch of rough Bourbon &leafy hops up front. Toffee, a touch of woodiness, figs, raisins to a lesser extent, a little brown sugar as well as this warms, more leafy hops. Finishes dry, cakey, with a little peat, some boozeyness
MF: Fairly chewy, slight carbonation, warming
Pretty good, but fairly pricey for what is. I'd rather have Backwoods Bastard any day & still have enough $ for another almost. I appreciate the effort, but don't dig the crazy pricing. Drinks a little slow, complex & a little boozey

Pours dark reddish brown. Minimal head & lacing after pour. Nonexistent after a few minutes. Smells sweet, dark fruits especially plums, hints of bourbon. Taste follows smell with nice bourbon warmth at the back of the throat. I like bourbon & I like Scottish/Scotch ales so I dig this beer.
