I should have bought two!

I like the label, despite the obvious mechanical and grammatical problems with the descriptions (double "and"s, "alot", "misterious").

Pitch black with almost no head -a bit of brown foam. Roasted, chocolate malts predominate the smell and taste. Heavy and smooth. An ideal stout.

Could be a session stout but for the bottle size. I hope this is available on a regular basis.

A: Pitch black, tan head. Not much head or retention, but it does leave some lace. The head should really stand up on a stout.

S: Roasty chocolate. Very inviting.

T: Smooth, roasty flavour. Not at all burnt or harsh. The roasted character is certainly there, but it may be a little light for the style. Dry, slightly fruity aftertaste.

M: The body is on the heavy side of moderate. Impressive for its strength. Slightly creamy. Moderate carbonation.

D: Exceptional. The light roasty character means it's that much more drinkable for me!

I'm generally not fond of dry stouts, but I like this one a lot!

This is one of the best stouts in BC coming close to the heralded Crannog Back hand of God. Big black with a brown head this beer smells all nice and roasty burnt like. The flavours are on the large size with burnt chocolate malts taking the lead. This just kills the Granville Island offering and is now in my top ten alltime BC list. Sweet.

Appearance. Pours a deep, dark brown with half a finger of creamy tan head.

Smell. Roasty malts, dark chocolate, molasses. Smells like a nice stout alright.

Taste. Dark roasty malt, a little molasses, smoky wood and coffee. Slightly acidic. Tastes great and much lighter tasting than it looks.

Mouthfeel. Medium body, maybe a bit less and medium-low, smooth carbonation. Nice and clean.

Overall. Really nice tasting, easy drinking stout. I really enjoyed the bottle and could go for another.

Somebody recently told me that this brewery had gone downhill with new ownership. Maybe they didn't try this stout... Looking forward to Old Yale's other offerings.

650ml bottle from my last trip to Victoria. Pours a dark dark brown with a finger of cappucino head that slowly fizzles out to leave a thin layer.

Terrific sessionable stout. Oatmeal is initially noticeable along with a pleasant roasted barley and coffee bitterness. Light chocolate, earthy tobacco, a pleasant Brit hop bite in the finish. This is a really nice take on the style. Slightly thin mouthfeel but for 5.2% you have to expect that - really full flavor for that ABV. This is a beer I would love to have available locally, a bomber is no problem any time of day.

From a 650 ml brown bottle. This newer incarnation is listed as 5% abv. on the label. Pours out a dense opaque pitch black hue, with a tight spongy tan head that retains to a thick cap.

Earthy roasted malt, mild coffee and wafery cocoa are prominent on the nose, along with some toasty malt and chicory, treacle and licorice.

Soft toasty, roasty malt up front in the flavour, and the texture leads me to believe there's some wheat in there, or perhaps some oats. Coffee rises up in the middle, followed by dry cocoa, then a dry clean finish.

Full-bodied mouthfeel on the lighter end, velvety and creamy smooth texture, with a moderate amount of carbonation.

A fine, solid stout for the style, great to see the new Old Yale still up to form and maintaining its quality. A great session stout, this could easily carry an evening on its own.

Pours a very opaque black, little bit of red highlights on the edges, big and thick tan head, lots of sticky lace. Smell is caramel, chocolate, coffee, lots of roasted grains, and some floral hops. Taste is lots of chocolate, coffee, caramel, light sourness near the end, wicked roasted grain bitterness in the finish and some hits of butter. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with medium carbonation. Super smooth and flavourful, great stout.

Appearance- Pours a jet black with a finger width of foamy tan head.

Smell- Smoky notes, roasted barley, burnt coffee bean, dark chocolate.

Taste- Sharp and strong flavours of roasted barley and oats complemented by dark chocolate and smoky flavours. A hint of molasses is present. Light bitterness at the end.

Mouthfeel- Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall- An impressive oatmeal stout by Old Yale. I enjoyed the roasted flavours and aromas. The appearance was mouth-watering. Definitely worth seeking out.

A: pours an almost jet-black with a 1 finger, bubbly, creamy tan head that dissipates to a relatively thick foam on top. leaves some nice patchy lacing.

S: roasted chocolate malts with hints of coffee and a touch of Irish cream.

T: mmm, coffee and chocolate malts with a nice espresso, nutty aftertaste. slight hints of bitter northwest hops in the background.

M: very creamy, nice amount of carbonation for a distinct crispness and a silky-smooth, creamy finish

D: this is a great stout. Very malty, very creamy and easy to drink. I will be buying this beer again.

Bottle: Poured a deep black color stout with a big dark brown foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma of sweet chocolate malt with some subtle coffee notes. Taste is also dominated by some semi-sweet chocolate notes with some subtle but well balance coffee notes. Body has a nice creamy texture with some good carbonation. I thought this was very well done for the style, nothing extreme in here but very well balanced overall.

Pours a dark charcoal colour with chestnut highlights. A suddy brown head. Aroma starts off very sweet with dense roast, then arises a big, hefty oaty presence, finally migrates to a decadent chocolat malt. I detect a little sourness from the yeast. I found a lot of yeast in there for a sweet stout. The taste seems to shift more towards the brown malt, with a light coffee flavour hitting the back of the tongue. Happy to see good things coming from the West Coast - this would be a favourable go-to for the style.
Thanks Grub!

A - almost total blackout, short head left a random covering
S - milk chocolate, somewhat maple note with roasty malt
T - bakers chocolate and mild coffee flavours, roasty malt and a syrupy sweet finish
M - smooth and decent carbonation, somewhat chalky with a bitter finish
D - tasty and well balanced, impressed with my first brew from Old Yale Brewing

Another treat from BC!

A - Pours an opaque black, thin layer of mocha head with a bit of retention and no real lacing.

S - Dark chocolate, a bit musty, with marshmallows and some earthy undertones.

T - The chalky / musty dark cocoa comes through, but roasted coffee surprisingly dominates and lingers on the tongue.

M - Medium bodied ale that goes down smooth and finishes with a touch of dryness.

D - This stuff is very tasty, offering some nice chocolate and coffee flavours. A worthy offering to any stout fan, and a pleasant surprise. I'm intrigued to see what else this brewery has to offer.
