This beer is not what necessarily everyone's cup of tea. It has a nice crisp citrus edge to it, predominantly grapefruit and boasts a refreshing aroma to boot. Interacting well with the palate are it's deeper, more smokey notes which are extremely pleasant. It's a deep, creamy gold in color and has a beautifully balanced content of yeast that delivers a good head each time.

I had a pint of this on tap at Cultus Lake yesterday evening. Quite enjoyable, but not outstanding.

A: clear amber.
S: tropical fruit, especially citrus. a bit floral, a bit grassy. not strong.
T: follows the scent. decently bitter, some citrus balanced with malts.
F: no complaints.

This one's pretty good, but since we're in BC, I think I'll stick to the West Coast style IPAs.

Got a bottle of this from Rutager in a recent trade. Thanks for the awesome box of beer man!

From a bomber into a snifter

APPEARANCE: Pours a small, bubbly, white head with decent retention. Head fades to a bubbly film and ring. Hazy burnt orange in color with no carbonation evident. A splotchy wisp remains until the end leaving some nice lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Pale malts, caramel notes, with some light pine and floral notes. Pretty nice really, and plenty forthcoming enough.

TASTE: Pale malts, caramel sweetness with some mild, bitter floral notes at the finish. Mild and drier aftertaste of floral bitterness, a touch of pine and some caramel sweetness as balance. Quite nice and enjoyable for the ABV, but a little mild for the IPA style.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Semi-creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes slightly dry on the palate. A touch watery perhaps; could be creamier for the style.

OVERALL: This was pretty good overall. An enjoyable beer that was impressive enough for the ABV. For the IPA style, however, it is unfortunately a little mild. Nevertheless, one I certainly enjoyed and would gladly drink again on a hot summer's afternoon. Cheers again Rutager!

Appearance - Pours a light copper with a finger width of foamy bubbly white head.

Smell - Slight earthy hops, citrus, tropical fruits, and caramel malts.

Taste - Nice balance of the earthy hops and citrus flavours followed by caramel malts. Light bitterness at the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Nice crisp and dry finish.

Overall - A well-crafted EIPA by Old Yale. Stays true to the style by staying well balanced in malts and hops.

Appearance. Pours a very clear amber-gold with a thin white head that actually lasts a while and leaves a bit of lacing.

Smell. Lemons, limes and oranges with a little fresh red berries and some caramel malts.

Taste. Caramel malts and grain, bitter grassy hops, a little citrus, a little bit earthy.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with medium-low carbonation.

Overall. A good ipa. Kind of a english with west coast influence. I'd drink it again.

Thanks to biboergosum for this one.

Poured from a 355ml. can.

Appearance: A nice honey-colored body with a strong 3 finger head that slowly recedes and clings to the glass.

Smell: Floral notes, orange, citrus and a kiss of honey.

Taste: Hop candy at first then a bit bready, like crackers maybe. Some cedar, orange rinds and pineapple as well.

Mouthfeel: Has a crisp clean feel overall but i find it lacks a little punch.

Overall: A good IPA but not a standout IMO. Don't know if it belongs so high on the Top 100 as there are better IPAs but it is certainly worth trying at least once.

355ml can. A very new arrival in Alberta - I'd heard from somebody who had hearsay that Old Yale was no more. Colour that solid source wrong, eh?

This beer pours a clear, bright brassy amber hue, with two fingers of airy, puffy ecru head, which leaves some sudsy substrata of lace around the glass as it lazily subsides.

It smells of bready caramel malt, lemon oil, flat citrus essences, and some leafy, grassy hops. The taste is mild overripe citrus, a somewhat creamy caramel malt, and increasingly bitter leafy, faintly pine needle-esque hops.

The bubbles are pretty idle, though not exactly performing the devil's work, the body a teetering medium weight, a mite bit clingy, but otherwise smooth. It finishes kind of muddled - some oppressed grassy, musty hops stumbling about with the thinning, souring malt.

Well, classified properly, this one is. Not much of the ol' West Coast IPA tropes to be found here - but the slight increase in ABV, old-world hops, and shifting malt is all there, making this rather easy to drink, though not all that interesting.

An above average IPA with excellent drinkability but nothing out of the ordinary.

When poured out of the bottle, always gives a big fluffy head, heavy on the lacing on the glass on the way down.

A very mellow scent, typical of IPAs with a tropical, citrusy smell. Taste is rather disappointing in comparison but still a good IPA.

Could not taste alchohol but could get a definite malt taste that worked well.

Pours a clear copper color with a medium white head. Really nice aroma of citrusy hops with some floral notes, and bready malt. The taste is dominated by the hops with a grapefruit flavor. There is some malty sweetness in there too. The flavors really came out after this warmed up a bit. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Dry finish and leaves a lasting bitter aftertaste. This is a really good IPA.

650ml bottle poured into pint glass nov3 2009

A slightly hazy light golden color with a two finger head that just sits there and coats my glass with lace the whole way down. also worth mentioning is the slow rising bubbles starting from all depths

S loads of bread, caramel and hops with some citrus, all blend well together for a nice mix

T as it smells but with a more caramel and toffee and the sweetness that go's with it. the sweet malt's go very well with the hops forming a good balance where neither is overwhelmed

M creamy and thick with a good amount of bitterness

D I nearly poured this down my trout my only problem is not finding it east of BC

I had a bit of an eyeopener this weekend in BC, and that would be that I should move there and drink IPA's. after drinking Red Racer and this beauty I'm thinking a move may be in order. both great in their own ways and much better then I expected. I did not realize Red Racer was that high on the Canadian top 25 and this beer will be joining soon. worth looking for and trying whenever you can

Bottle shared with Derek - cheers!

Dark golden pour with a white head and some good lace. Apparently the hopping in this beer is entirely east kent goldings, and here it provides a charming floral, smooth and slightly spicy aroma, which plays off well against some fruity malts. Great bitterness, as the floral hopping jumps out from a earthy, toasty malt background. Medium body and carbonation.

This is a great sessionable IPA, and a bit of a gem from the west coast. I'd love to have a few of these in an evening.

Another trade from ritzkiss...thanks again!

An aggressive pour doesn't yield much head. I guess your bottle was a little shaken up, ritzkiss. I poured this one pretty hard. A thin blanket of off-white head does seem to stick around a while though. Little bit of lacing. The beer is slightly-cloudy and amber in colour. Not bad looking.

This IPA has a really different smell to it; I can't quite put my finger on what it is. I think this could smell amazing if there was a lot more strength to the smell but it's pretty weak. Hops mixed with fresh whole wheat bread, butter and custard...strange but not bad.

Tastes pretty much like is smells. Hops are dominant with undertones of whole wheat bread and a buttery quality. A little low on malt, making it feel a bit hop heavy (not completely balanced) though not a bad brew. Just a slight alcohol presence while it's in your mouth. The aftertaste is a little on the bitter side for my liking.

Nice medium body and a balanced, moderate carbonation. A little creamy. I'd have to say the feel is the most impressive element of this beer.

This IPA smells and tastes a bit too weak for me. I prefer to taste more malt and maybe even a little more hops. In my experience with IPAs, I definitely prefer American and Belgian styles to the English style found here. English IPAs always remind me of a cross between an IPA and a bitter, and I'm not a big fan of bitters. Goes down easy enough but not one I'll be seeking out in the future.
