750ml bottle served in a Belgian snifter.

Pours clear, dark chestnut brown, with a decent head that has good retention. and leaves very good lacing.

Aroma: pleasing, with dried fruits and faint spices.

Flavor: lightly sweet - excellent bitter-sweet balance. Faint hints of orange peel, chocolate and vanilla.

Feel: medium body and medium, soft carbonation.

O: a very good (Canadian) Belgian dubbel at a nice (U.S.) price.

I found the smell and taste muted on this one. I didn't detect any off-flavours but I also didn't find that any nice flavours really came through in full force. I could taste the alcohol. Certainly not a beer that is hard to drink, but I wanted more pleasant esters and malt flavour from a dubbel.

Poured from a brown 25.4 oz. bottle.Has a very dark brown color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of spices, malts, fruits. Taste is malts, spice, dark fruits, some licorice. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a quality beer.

From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #71 (December 2012):

Wow, quite the treat we have in front of us. The subtle spicing is spot on which adds to the pile of complexity we are still trying to sort out sip to sip. We’d go as far to say that this is comparable to its counterparts in Belgium. This brewery should jump into the arena of quads and tripels pronto or even something a little less traditional … A Belgian IPA. Give this Dubbel a whir.l

STYLE: Dubbel
ABV: 8.0%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Deep dark mahogany, tall light tan head

SMELL: Caramel, spicy, charred raisins, blood oranges, estery, quince paste, dark bread, candied lemon

TASTE: Medium bodied, crisp, slick, mild caramel, brown bread, burnt oranges, mild spice, herbal phenols, cooked raisins, bread crust, dried hay, yeast, mild hopping, faint broth, drying dark malt finish

From the corked, caged 750 ml. bottle. Sampled on August 21, 2014.

A darker brown colored pour leads up to a lingering tan or beige head that is silky and soft.

There are red grapes on that nose. Along with Belgian toasted biscuit, yeast, candied sugar, and some light spice.

Medium or better body.

The flavor echoes the aroma with a definite fruity character ala grapes, orange, or cherry. But other than that I get the typical Belgian toasted biscuit and malt characters I would expect from a Dubbel, with a tad more punch that makes me think Quad. Some light hop finale. Enjoyable.

Poured into a snifter at the Prytania Park Hotel, New Orleans

A: Caramel brown with a nice tan one-finger head that lasted. Frothy lacing.

S: Belgian yeast dominates, followed by candied sugar, dark fruits (dates, raisins, figs) and chocolate.

T: Follows nose to a T. Smooth, sweet, sensual. Tangy. A yeasty aftertaste.

M: Medium with medium, frothy carbonation.

O: Glad I finally found this Canadian brew. A great abbey ale that should be shared.

Brewed close to my home in northwestern Québec, this beer is a source of regional pride for us Abitibiens. That being said, I have to say that although I really do enjoy a glass of Abbey Dubbel, it is very yeasty and it will probably please fans of Belgian brews. It has some surprising and refreshing fruity aromas and it goes well with meaty comfort foods.

750ml corked bottled into a wicked weed snifter.

Pours a dark brownish red color with a very big foamy white head that quickly dissipates. The smell is very sweet...candied sugar. The tasty is bready...candy sugar again...very yeasty. extremely sweet. Not offensive though. Solid flavor. medium bodied with medium-high carbonation.

overall i dig it. nothing out of this world but just solid. recommended.
