Quebec has really upped the ante with their micro breweries, and this is a great stout from la Belle Province. Average smell, nice stout, heavy taste, and very traditional in pallet and bouquet. Really nice stout overal.

Pours nice and dark with a tan head.
Lots of carbonation leaves a nice ring of beige foam.
Tastes of coffee, toasted malt and chocolate. There is some bitterness on the final.
Easy to drink with a bit of an alcohol feel. Compared to St-Ambroise's Oatmeal stout or DDC's Aphrodisiac it's a bit on the thin side. Worth a try.

Got this one from peensteen last summer. This bottle has over a year of age on it then. Cheers, man!

From a bottle into a snifter
Spent 3 months in the barrel

APPEARANCE: A slow foamer on this one. A careful pour comes out clear brown and yields a two finger, medium-looser looking, slightly foam tan head with very good retention. Sits clear bistre brown with medium carbonation in the glass. Head slowly fades to a full foam cap. Touches of wisp and a ring remain leaving touches of lacing down the glass as it empties. A touch foamy and light in color for the style.

SMELL: Definite vanilla, caramel and notes of butterscotch on the nose. Oak and coconut with notes of bourbon as well. Hints of milk chocolate as well. Milder nose, but nice enough.

TASTE: Bourbon, alcohol and caramel notes up front. The bourbon is a bit perfume-like. Butterscotch is in there as well. More booze at the swallow with oak, vanilla, milk chocolate, and lots of butterscotch and toffee lingering on the palate. Alcohol and spirit it there too.

PALATE: Medium body and slightly higher levels of carbonation. A little light and foamy on the palate, goes down a bit harsh with a burn and finishes sticky. Some heat lingers.

OVERALL: Boozy for the ABV, and the bourbon is a little piercing and cheap. The look and feel were definitely lack-luster as well. A half decent barrel aged stout, but with every brewery doing this style now, this one is certainly nothing worth writing home about. Thanks again peensteen!

Marie-Josephte Corriveau was a French 18th century woman who killed her husband in his sleep and was then sentenced by British military authorities to be hung and her body left on display in an iron gibbet. Legends and fantastical accounts of her story and ghost remain popular in Quebec folklore to this day.

La Corriveau, the beer named after her, is an appropriately spooky black colour. It will certainly scare lager drinkers, though the opacity and absence of highlights shouldn't intimidate anyone as these features tend to designate a more substantive, flavourful beer. The solid head is a sign of good quality too.

More indicative, however, is aroma. And with this beer an 'aroma' as such doesn't really exist. Any whiffs of roasted barley or bittersweet chocolate too faint to claim. It persuades nothing, except maybe to dip your nose further into the glass in the hopes of discovering more. It's as bland as stouts come.

And indeed the flavour profile is correspondingly lackluster. Hopes of truffles, espresso, or anything you'd serve on a dessert platter are dashed within the first couple sips. Instead, we get the sad, crusty chocolate cake found in the discount section of a low-end grocer (or the packaged mix found in Aisle 7).

The mouthfeel is especially unfortunate. Oatmeal Stouts feature a full-body defined by smooth, silky and often creamy textures. This one has the taste of oatmeal that got dried out and burnt to the bottom of the pot; the finish is highly astringent and reminiscent of stale office place instant coffee.

OK, I'm being overly critical because I'm disappointed this oatmeal stout didn't stand-up to those of its neighbours (i.e., Pit Caribou, St. Ambroise). In fairness, it's a passable offering that, while it doesn't go above the mainstream, comes in on par with it; broadly speaking, it's serviceable.

Le Bilboquet definitely have a few nice offerings in their portfolio but, it's fair to say, they are far from the pinnacle of Quebec craft beer. Offerings like La Corriveau are absolutely fine for most consumers but anyone reading on this site probably expects a lot more from their ales, and certainly their stouts.

Pitch black in color with a nice foamy head. Nice roasted malt with some smoked malts smell. Nice roasted taste too, with a good chocolate sweetness to it, really smooth. A pleasant bitterness is there to round it up.

Appearance: A nice bubble show produces a three fingered head of beige foam that caps the fudge brown liquid; auburn highlights and plenty of lacing

Smell: Roasted barley, ash, powdered chocolate and ground coffee

Taste: Charred toast, with dark chocolate and coffee tones developing; licorice flavors blossom, in the middle, but the finish is quite dry

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation; a bit thin though the ABV is low

Overall: A pretty decent oatmeal stout, though I miss the creamy texture from the best examples of the style

Black in color. About a finger of beige looking head. On the nose toasted/ roasted malts and a slight touch of caramel. On the palate I get a straight forward, no bullshit, well done oatmeal stout. Its got a good amount of coffee like roast and maybe a bit of chocolate too. Roasted barley is definitely there. I find far too many breweries make their stouts either far too sweet and syrupy, or acrid and overdo the roasted element; this beer is neither. Its extremely smooth easy drinking and the carbonation is okay.I wasn't expecting much as this beer was purchased from a tiny little gas station in a random little stockpile but it turned out to be awesome.

A- Pours a very dark brown/blackish color, very much like Coca Cola. It appears to be thick, with an oil like consistency and has a beautiful caramel colored head. This itself is dense and whipped like, with excellent retention, such as in an ice cream float! Lacing is decent, as there are several small patches clinging to the side of the glass.

S- This has a very deep aroma overall, with powerful smells of dark chocolate, fresh coffee beans, burnt malts, and a certain dryness to it....contributed by the addition of oats....no hop presence on the finish detected.

T- Very nice flavors overall! This beer follows the aromas well, with perhaps even deeper representation of the aforementioned smells. The dark chocolate becomes very cocoa like with an unsweetened bitterness that lingers, and the coffee beans convert into espresso flavors. There is an underlying dark roast malt/burnt toast quality to the overall flavor that lasts throughout the taste. The finish is slightly of hop cones but it is minor. Very decent indeed!

M/O- Full bodied and velvet like texture best describes this beer. Carbonation is creamy and dense, yet plentiful and helps to disburse the flavors fully and evenly across the palate! The alcohol is well hidden and the grainy oat dryness of the beer keep me wanting more! Definitely a well made brew and I'd most definitely get more down the road.....another winner out of La Belle Province!
