500ml bottle, served in goblet. Bottled July 7th, 2011

A - a light red-brown body, with dense, latte foam-esque head. 2" thick, long lasting

S - Very faint smell. Mild sweet malt present, but not much else. Almost nothing at all.

T - A very simple barleywine. Medium malt off the top, with a hefty booze taste coming after.

M - Medium-low carbonation, with a medium body. Good, but nothing special.

Pours brown with solid head and nice lacing. As far as barleywines go, this looked gorgeous.

The aroma is smoky and hoppy. Oak comes through as well.

The taste is quite balanced leaning slightly towards bitterness. There's smoke to it as well as some slight spice. Three aftertaste is pine and slight caramel.

The body is medium weight and medium full. The finish is fairly dry and slightly sticky.

Overall a good barleywine. Somewhat unique for the style and delivers what you'd expect. alcohol is well hidden and it drinks well.

Bottled June 7, 2011

Beer is golden brown, a bit dark toffee. Very large off-white head. Very good retention.

Vinous fruit scents in the nose, grape and plum. Some malt, a bit of caramel. Some muted earthy hops.

Taste is similar. Vinous fruit flavours, some bready malt, a bit of earthy hops. Not overly complex. Some alcohol.

Full bodied, moderate carbonation, chewy. Some alcohol heat.

Overall, fairly ho hum. Not bad but not something I would go back to.

500ml bottle poured into tulip 4/5/12 bottle sent out by papat444

A glowing orange amber with a large loose soapy light tan head that has a few minuets of retention and leaves just a few random patches of lace

S sweet candied citrus, brandy, raisin bread without the spice and some brown sugar

T still has a fair amount of hops even with 9 months on it, that being said sweet malt has a pretty big part, some earthy notes, faint nutty aspect and the booze is well concealed

M medium full, sticky on the lips, not much for booze and it leaves a little grit behind on your gums, a long aftertaste of nutty rind

O the smell may have deserved a higher score so inflated slightly here, its a solid brew and I'm impressed by how well they concealed the booze, I'd have a few of these aging and a few in the fridge if I could find it here

I love the fact that there's so many hidden gems scattered throughout Canada, thanks again papat444 for uncovering this one for me

A: 1 1/4" frothy cream coloured head over deep orange amber coloured liquid.

S: A citrus explosion of orange, grapefruit and lemon.

T: Orange with toffee and slightly nutty sweet malt flavours.

M: Medium mouthfeel with a medium level of fine carbonation.

O: One of the best barleywines I have ever had, this beer was aged for about a year. Extremely drinkable, slightly sweet I would definitely have this in my fridge if I lived in Quebec.

bottle from awesome girlfriend... and Im drunk.
pours a nice autumn color with a LOT of head... too much. but the taste actually pulls in the appearance, nice amber with full flavor... much better than it looks. 11% is ridiculous. nowhere near anything on the nose or the taste... I would guess 5%...
really nice beer... if you find it, get it...

Same year barleywine, apparently even a few months ade a difference. Gentelmen, have patience. Good mouthfeel, a tad boozy and heating, a rich malting, fruity, dangerously drinkable. A quarter inch of retained head on fruity body. Fruity yeast made it smell and initially taste like a Belgian strong.

Deep, hazy gold without lustre. An off-white head lazily drops to a film and leaves some spots of lace behind. Caramel, fruit, sherry and peppery alcohol in the nose. Sweet caramel flavour with some backing biscuit, hints of smoke, flowers and honey. Alcohol is surprisingly well hidden. Medium-light body and medium carbonation seem a little off for the style, but at least it drinks dangerously well considering its weight.

This reminds me a lot of some of Fullers Vintage Ales. The appearance is similar, there are echoes in the flavour profile, and its just as drinkable. A decent barleywine, though I'm not sure it has enough going on for me to revisit it. Worth a shot, though.

Got this one from papat444. This bottle said 10%. Served in a pint-shaped taster glass.

A - Pours with a half-finger of quick-dissolving cola-like white foam. No ring, cap, or lace. The body is a hazy golden orange color.

S - Caramel, light smoke, treacle, some fruity esters, sherry-like oxidation, and a bit of alcohol.

T - This is very sweet, with plenty of toffee and caramelized sugar. There are also notes of honey, light citrus, spicy esters, and a hint of smoked malt that suggests Scotch Ale. Some alcohol in the finish, but not out of character for the style or ABV. More of a 3.75 here.

M - Surprisingly fizzy, and perhaps a tad over-carbonated for the style. Medium-full body, with a sticky finish.

D - This isn't something I'd drink on my own, especially in the 500ml serving size. However, it's a solid, drinkable, barleywine that I'd gladly share with a friend or two.

A: Dark orangish brown, not fully transluscent. Quite a nice head, off white. Solid head retention. Solid lacing.

S: Strawberries, quite a nice amount. A lot of very sweet malts: sugar, caramel. A nice amount of spices too. Pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon mostly. A bit of nuts. Grain like smell, reminiscent of multi grain bread.

T: Big malty taste. Lots of caramel malts up front. Still quite sweet with the strawberries. A nice amount of oak, smoke and sweet sherry (makes me think a little of the Macallan). Molasses and licorice are present with a bit of vanilla. Butter like taste mixed with cashews. A distinct piny bitterness cuts it at the end. Superbly balanced and complex, maybe my favorite tasting barleywine.

M: Quite heavy chewy with a medium carbonation making it very nice feeling barleywine.

D: Big taste, big feel, balanced taste, only the sweetness can stop you. But honestly, I could drink a lot of these.
