Strong Irish red ale with smokey peat lingering. Another great beer from White Hag.

A: The beer is very hazy brown in color. It poured with a quarter finger high off white head that quickly died down, leaving some lacing on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of toffee malts and peat are present in the nose along with hints of tea.
T: The taste follows the smell, having sweet flavors of caramel and toffee malts along with smoky notes of peat and hints of tea.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is quite malty for an Irish Red Ale and almost seems like a Scottish Ale in some aspects. Although it seems to be a little strong from the amount of malts, no alcohol is present in the taste.

Meabh Rua pours a very dark red to brown color and struggles to maintain a consistent head (too cold when poured perhaps?). The aroma is sweet malt with a bit of smokiness. Meabh Rua tastes like a traditional red ale combined with a smoky peat undertone. Sweet roasted malt takes the forefront with tastes of caramel, bread, and dark fruit flavors following close behind. There is very little to no detection of pronounced hops. And at 8.2%, Meabh Rua exhibits surprisingly little alcohol detection on the palate. The mouthfeel is medium and a bit sticky and the carbonation level is low. Overall Meabh Rua is the most intriguing Irish red ale I have tasted, combining both a traditional red ale with a smoky darkness.

Meabh Rua contains all elements of a traditional Irish red ale but adds just enough smoky character to set this beer apart from the competitors and push the style envelope. If you are a fan of Irish red ales, do give this one a try.

Bottle purchased at Nathaniel Square Corner Store in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a dark amber brown, with a 1.5 inch head, and a small amount of lacing.

This one smells like caramel, toffee, peat smoke, and a bit of breadiness.

I can't really even nail down what kind of beer this is. It's got elements of an Irish Red Ale and a smoky Scotch Ale, all rolled together. There's a really nice smoked element to this, some peat, and bitter brown bread, with some sweeter elements of caramel and toffee.

This is medium bodied, with a crisp and bready mouthfeel, and a moderate level of carbonation.

This is a really solid brewery and I've gotta keep trying more from them.
