This bar is where I learned about craft beer. I was a porter and got a chance to sample a good deal of the beers they offered. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly (as long as you are not an ass). They also play a great selection of music. You need not worry about mainstream music while you are enjoying your beer. I also had the opportunity to explore great cheeses and a nice selection of mustards to go with them. The prices are reasonable.

A great stop if you are in Grosse Pointe or on the east side of Detroit.

Coming from the Grosse Pointe area i think this bar (which was one of the first speak easys in the area) has an awesome prohibition era feel with great beers on tap (and in bottles) an awesome selection of cheeses to go with them, the staff was very friendly and helpful, they knew their stuff when i started asking about beers (working at a beer store myself) i know some questions can get a little overwhelming almost like people want to taste it through your description and they did a fine job at that. The city needs more places like this.

Of all the bars around the Grosse Pointe Area, this is the best. The bartenders and staff are incredibly friendly, and the patrons (who are mostly between early 20's to mid 30's) usually are too. I also love the vibe the place has, it's dimly lit and incredibly laid-back. Towards the back they have a lot of old assorted beer cans from various time periods, as well as the old tap handles from beers that they used to offer. The place was originally built in 1912 to act as a speakeasy during Prohibition... How awesome is that? The place has lots of history, and old school nick-nacks. In early May the bar throws the Annual Prohibition Party, during which they offer 5c beers. The beer selection is phenomenal, they have something like 250 beers, 10 different styles from 32 countries. As for the pricing, it can be a little expensive if you feel like being adventurous and trying lots of different beers, the majority of the beers range from $3.00-$7.00, with a select few ranging from $9.00-$19.00. One of the bars biggest upsides is the fact that all Michigan beers are $4.00. The tap selection leaves a little more to be desired, but because of the massive selection, it's not a huge deal. The bar also offers a wide variety of single malt Scotches, for those who are interested. All in all, it's a very nice place. It's totally a dive bar, but it's a dive bar that offers class and charm.
