An homage to the hop, our take on DIPA showcases Chinook and Nelson Sauvin hops. The Nelson contributes the white-wine-like fruitiness to flavor and aroma, while the Chinook contributes pine and grapefruit notes.

Type: 12-oz. bottle
Glass: Beer Nerd 12-oz. tulip
From: Bine & Vine Bottle Shop in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $3.14 with 10 percent off for a variety 6-pack
Purchased: Aug. 4, 2017
Consumed: Aug. 15, 2017
Reviewed as: American Double / Imperial IPA
Misc.: Canned on July 3, 2017
Picked this up along with a bunch of others at Bine & Vine. Had tried three Barley Forge beers going in and really liked one of them, giving Patsy a 4.12. The two IPAs, however, I did not like as much, giving Future Tripping a 3.75 and The Orange Curtin a 3.65. Hoping I try an IPA from them that I actually can recommend. Bottle read, “Shining a spotlight on hop flavor instead of hop bitterness, One Louder is the perfect brew for any rockstar hophead bold enough to enjoy life at full volume. One Louder is a Double India Pale Ale brewed with head-banging blend of hops. But don’t fear - all that explosive hop insanity is steadied and balanced by a malty backbeat of Maris Otter and US 2-Row malt. Rock out with one of America’s loudest beers.!” Website description had Nelson and Chinook for hops, not the greatest mix for me.
Poured a gold hazy color with 2-to-3 fingers of rocky white head. Lots of bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Outstanding lacing. World-class retention. (Sight - 4.25)
Smelled dry Nelson, trashy Galaxy (even though it’s not in it), floral, dank resin, herbal, garlic, onion, candied grapefruit, melon, a touch of lactose and mango. (Smell - 3.75)
Taste followed the nose for the most part, but some subtle differences. Got dry Nelson, bitter grapefruit rind, trash, garlic, onion, spicy Chinook, melon, bitter mango peel, white wine and a touch of lactose. (Taste - 3.75)
Medium body. Creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Abrupt, dry, bitter, spicy finish. (Feel - 3.50)
This was very good, but disappointing overall. Not sure I’d seek this out again. (Overall - 3.75)

Great double. Smooth and tasty. Well balanced at 8.2, not overpowering which some Double IPAs can be. Had a sweet IPA finish but not fruity. Just well played in getting this beer right. When in Costa Mesa visit Barley Forge. Sampler is a nice appetizer.

Strong alcohol content and taste. Burns a little going down. Distinctly west coast flavor. If this beer was 7.3 instead of 8.3 it would be one of my favorites, but as it is the alcohol overrides the flavor. But I'm nit picking. If I was sitting in NC this would be on my top 5.

12 ounce bottle poured into a tulip
A: Pours a dark hazy orange with a white head, some slight lacing, not seeing much carbonation, looks unfiltered.
A: Not as aromatic as I was anticipating, subtle aromas of guava, grapefruit, garlic/onion, not picking up any malts, just subtle hops aromas.
T: A mix of guava and grapefruit rind flavors, moderate amount of bitterness, especially for a IIPA, aftertaste is citrus rind and pine.
M: Feels under carbonated, medium bodied with a very dry finish.
O: I was expecting more from this, not a hop bomb, aromas and taste are more like an IPA than a IIPA, enjoyable but I probably won't seek this out again, plenty of better tasting IIPAs available.

On tap at Pizza Press, Fullerton, CA.
Burnished orange hue. Finger + of fluffy white head.
Smells tropical and citrus, going in the grapefruit pith direction.
Taste is more of a blend of tropical and grapefruit rind with hints of pine. But not overwhelming. Quite approachable.
Solid offering. Will seek out again.
