A solid offering that puts a malty spin on the style and adds a bready note to the finish and the nose. A big mouthfeel and rounded finish make this very satisfying. Combine this with a very good Pumpkin beer in the mixed pack and you have a nice set of Fall seasonals from Mill Street.

355 mL bottle picked up at the LCBO, courtesy of their Fall sampler pack. Listed at 5.6%, and served slightly chilled - this is one of those styles that I haven't had the opportunity to try a lot, but each new marzen raises my impression of the style. What can I say - I'm an unabashed malty lager enthusiast.

Pours a bright, clear golden-amber colour, generating a little more than one finger's worth of foamy, frothy white head. Good retention; it takes more than a few minutes for the froth to dissipate, eventually settling into a dense, creamy cap and a collar of sticky lacing. The aroma is fairly standard, but enticing enough - bready malts, toasted grains and lager yeast are all apparent, in addition to lesser notes of caramel and earthy, grassy hops. A little sulphury, but not in an objectionable way. Looks pretty good from here.

Perhaps a little sweeter than I anticipated, but still reasonably well-balanced. Bready, biscuity malts and toasted nuts are the first flavours I pick up, followed by a modest wallop of caramel sweetness. This is soon countered by the noble hop bill, which comes off as rather leafy, or even earthy; either way, it does a respectable job of neutralizing the caramel - such that the brew finishes with only a touch of residual sweetness, in addition to the light earthiness. This continues into the aftertaste, which has an almost woody/herbal quality to it. Medium-bodied, with a smooth mouthfeel that becomes creamier as the (initially moderate) carbonation begins to weaken. I probably served this too cold, because by the end of the glass I was really starting to dig this one.

Final Grade: 3.81, a solid B+. Mill Street Oktoberfest Beer is a tasty, malty, quality session beer that qualifies as one of this brewery's better lagers. It's deftly balanced, with just enough caramel and toasted malt sweetness to grab your attention, and a hop bill that both counters and complements the malts perfectly. A fine lager that I'd be happy to return to again - though I doubt I'll pick up a second sampler just for this. Put this in a tallboy can and release it each September/October and I'd be all over it.

Serving Type - 355ml bottle, poured into a small pint glass

Appearance - Copper colored, crystal clear. White head sits on top. Moderate lacing.

Smell - Lot's of malt. Malt for days. Heavy caramel, but not a lot of anything else. light floral bits.

Taste - Heavy caramel malts here as well. Also lots of bready malts. Very bready. Light hop bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Moderately heavy body. Light carbonation, smooth finish.

This has a nice lacing and film in the glass with a bright light amber colour. Very clear and bright.

S - mild grassy and floral hop profile with a lot of biscuity malts, toasty and caramel, bit of faint smoke and earthy complexities, some lemon, hay. Subdued but overall pretty nice.

T - a grainy maltiness, with some floral and biscuity sweetness, apple/pear fruits, some very mild bitterness (hay, faint florals) some nuttiness and pronounced malty notes, butterscotch, toffee, then the finish is slightly sour, with a smoky cereal malt.

M - crisp and refreshing, light body with plenty of carbonation, easy to drink with a quite dry bittered malt aftertaste. Easy drinking refresher with some decent flavour.

Tasty and sessionable, but I'd like to explore the field to justify the belief that there are better oktoberfest beers out there. This was crisp and malty, with some fairly good full flavours. But the finish was weak imo and overall it wasn't that exciting. I would have it again casually and like the style so will delve more deeply. Good beer and worth a try.

355ml bottle from the Mill st fall sampler. Poured into a pale ale shaker glass.

A- Clear dark golden color with a thin layer of foam which has some retention.

S- The aroma is malty with hints of caramel and grains with a touch of vanilla and molasses. Slight grassy with a tiny flutter of floral hops.

T- Malt sweetness up front with a hint of fruit ( apricot ) and a touch of caramel and yeast characteristics. Fairly wholesome with flavors of oven fresh bread. Hops are slight but add bitterness and im detecting some earthy flavors and a hint of smoke in the finish. Slightly astringent.

M- Medium bodied with good carbonation. Pretty smooth.

D- A very drinkable Oktoberfest

Overall a decent take on the style with some real nice Malty flavors. Nice aroma.
