look: 2.25 | smell: 2 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Poured with a half finger of head that barely lace and did not stick around. The body is a slightly cloudy orange with very low carbonation.

Smell: In a word, absent. The barest hints of malt is all that is present, even after warming up. Nothing bad, but didn't show up.

Taste: Very plain, as caramel malt mixed with milder bread taste turns to a hint of stone fruit fruitiness and ending with a dusting of slightly earthy hops that seem out of place.

Mouthfeel: Points get deducted for the lacklustre head and poor carbonation. The caramel and light peach and plum aftertaste save it from catastrophe though.

Drinkability: Well I drank it fairly quick, which I guess says something. Refreshing, although the hops just seem out of place if you were planning to go to town on it. Settled down well enough I suppose and light bodied, so yeah...it has some merit.

Final Thoughts: A rare disappointment from Mill St. but I think perhaps I'm being a bit too harsh. This beer is a party beer, that you grab and start putting back and it's superior to generic lager in that there is flavour that is there that doesn't overstay it's welcome, which I suppose is really the intent behind Oktoberfest. It just strikes me as odd since so many other Marzen's I have just come out far better then this one.

Single bottle from a Mill St. fall sampler pack poured into a tulip glass. A lovely burnished brass color with a finger of thick, creamy light beige head. Aroma is the classic Oktoberfest honeyed breakfast cereal malts with a hint of brown sugar, raisin/grapes, and very mellow hay-like hops. Taste mirrors the nose, with caramel, granola cereal, biscuit, and vinous fruit melding together. Soft mouth feel, a little creamy, moderate body and carbonation. Rather dry finish during which some noble hop grass and spice notes finally emerge, yet some nutty malt sweetness lingers for quite some time. Maybe I am getting something floral near the middle section. I am indeed reminded of some fall harvest motif. Maybe one of the better Mill St. seasonals; the style is pegged nicely here and there is enough going on to dissuade comparisons to some of the rather pedestrian macro-brewed takes emerging lately.

A solid offering that puts a malty spin on the style and adds a bready note to the finish and the nose. A big mouthfeel and rounded finish make this very satisfying. Combine this with a very good Pumpkin beer in the mixed pack and you have a nice set of Fall seasonals from Mill Street.
