Helles Bock
Mill Street Brew Pub
A pale (Helles in German, orange colour), strong German lager brewed with 100% Organic malt and hops. A great big white head gives way to a sweet malty note which is quickly followed by the aroma of alcohol. A rich malty flavour with hints of current and oranges is found on the first sip. The hops have a gentle bitterness to balance the malt. The alcohol is not a dominant flavour, but you certainly feel it after a glass or two.

On tap at the brewhouse, July 9th 2013.
Pours a gold colour, clear, with thin head. Lace is OK but yeah, looks a little heavy. OK for the style.
Smells mildly citric, with a soft drink kind of note. Maybe some malt and herbs. Pretty uninspiring, would like more aroma depth or complexity.
Taste is a little creamy, actually, with a touch of vanilla and some boozey notes. Marmalade, touch of whiskey. Orange maybe and a mild rye spice. Quite boozey and dry, have had better and more nuanced helles Bocks. But not overall bad.
Foamy, very foamy. Not hot in the mouth, but a bit sharp/warm on the very back. Not bad.
Decent enough Helles Bock, but I wouldn't mind the same finish on a bolder, more flavoursome palate.

Draft
Appearance - Clear golden yellow colour with an average size fizzy white coloured head. There is a below average amount of carbonation showing and there is some faint lacing. The head lasted for only a short while
Smell - Malts, breads/grains, herbal notes, corn
Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts and corn mixed with some slightly harsh herbal notes. There is also something along the lines of an apple juice sweetness. It ends with a grainy aftertaste.
Overall - It reminded me of one of those strong euro lager beers. It's drinkable but not something I'd drink again.

Half pint at Mill Street Ottawa. From notes.
A - Poured light golden, bright with good carbonation. Half finger of white head with no lace and no retention.
S - Grapes, apple juice, and sweet malt with an herbal hop note.
T - Corn, sweet malt, apple juice, some bread.
M - Good carbonation, medium to full body and a sweet finish.
O/D - Tastes kinda like a cheap Euro strong lager. Wasn't expecting this sort of beer from Mill Street. I couldn't come close to finishing this one, it was too sweet and too hard to drink. Didn't like it.
