355ml bottle, a refugee from their current winter mix pack.

This beer pours a murky, dark red-brick brown colour, with two pudgy fingers of tightly foamy, and somewhat bubbly beige head, which leaves a bit of coral reef lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells quite prominently of fresh-mashed, overripe bananas, astringent yeast, edgy, kind of spicy wheat malt, singed brown sugar, a hint of simple black fruit - boozy raisins, mostly - and a muddled sense of generic Christmas spice. The taste is more heady, fleshy banana, a dense caramel and wheat malt sweetness, middling earthy yeast, a fading clove/coriander seasonal affectation, and mild leafy, weedy hops.

The carbonation is tame, but duly frothy at random junctures, the body a hefty medium-full weight for the style, and quite agreeably smooth, the only chink in the armour a testy burgeoning alcohol character. It finishes on the sweet side, the caramel malt, banana pudding, wheat cereal, and bready spice carrying the day.

A decent, big-boy weizenbock, if perhaps one that relies a bit too much on the banana/yeast sledgehammer, rather than a more subtle touch to get its point across. Overall, worthy of a go, for its warming nature, as well as the unexpected holiday essences hidden within.

One of the 6 brews in their current winter back.

Pours a dark red brown colour with a lacy head that fades rather quickly. Aroma smells of rich banana and brown sugar, and generally tastes that way too with the exception of the alcohol being pretty upfront. Has a fairly malty backbone and slight bit of bitterness at the end as well.

I found that the sweetness was slightly overdone though, and doesn't especially complement the alcohol-ness of this style. One thing I did enjoy was the mouthfeel - it was quite thick and creamy. Definitely more of a winter beer as it warms you up quick.

Overall, an enjoyable beer but not something I'd particularly reach for again - the taste is just a bit too one dimensional for me. I'm overall becoming quite a fan of Mill St. though, this being the 4th beer I've tried from them.

355 mL bottle from the LCBO, courtesy of their latest sampler pack. Haven't tried a new weizenbock in quite a while, but with the cold weather finally descending upon my home, this particular offering is more than welcome in my glass tonight. Served well chilled.

Pours a muddy, dark coppery-brown colour, topped with one finger of dense, creamy off-white head. It wilts quickly, leaving a thin collar and a few wisps on the surface after only a few minutes have passed. Great aroma, with lots of yeasty banana and wheaty malt, with accompanying hints of raisin and clove. Rather sweet, but appropriate for the style and enticing enough to draw me in.

An enjoyable bock, with nothing surprising and only a few minor gripes for me to whine about. It's quite sweet, with slightly less banana than I picked up on the nose. There's also some wheat malt, raisin and prune, but a little boozy toward the finish and into the aftertaste. I find it integrates nicely with the dark fruits and molasses notes, but it does limit this one's drinkability. Medium-bodied, with light carbonation that gently agitates the tongue. Creamy and smooth going down, with the alcohol warming you nicely after a few sips - it's cold as shit out tonight, and this one is satisfying the job prerequisites competently.

Final Grade: 3.76, a well-earned B+. Mill Street's Weizenbock is a serviceable example of the style, though it really can't hold a candle to the German imports. The yeastiness is there, but the wheat malts simply lack the same aggressiveness and complexity of the paragons of this style. I'd get this again if the price was right, and it makes for a somewhat memorable conclusion to this season's new sampler pack. As an addendum, I am psyched that they opted to exclude the Stock Ale and include another seasonal in its place. The Organic Lager does the same job better anyway - variety is the spice of life!

Poured from bottle from Mills Street taster's pack into a pint glass.

Appearance - Dark mahogany color, 1 finger of creamy off-white head that dissipated very quickly. Light soapiness lingers on top and around the edges of the glass. Beer is very opaque and virtually no light can get through.

Smell - Booze and dark fruits right of the bat. Notably overripe cherries. After that some wheat, caramel and molasses. Almost a hint of funky yeasts in play here as well. Not bad but while each of these should combine for a great smelling beer the cohesive of the aromas just isn't there.

Taste - Burnt sugar, dark fruits, lots of sweetness and and boozy with slight bitter aftertaste. The taste is indicative of the ABV level. Still pretty good, but other Weizenbocks definitely hide the booze better. A touch of black licorice flavor as the beer warms slightly. As with the aromas the flavors just don't quite come together as cohesively as I would have hoped.

Mouthfeel - Smooth, but a little thin feeling especially comparing to a couple of the other weizenbocks I've had. Low carbonation and medium dry finish

Overall - Nice beer, but would rather have some of their other offerings and there are definitely better Weizenbocks out there. Nonetheless a good effort.

Pours a muddy dark brownish orange, on the darker end of a weizenbock, thin off white head forms and settles down to a thin ring around the glass, some lace spots stick.

Smell is neat, some dark fruit, heavy banana, clove, quite sweet, brown sugar, biscuity malt and some wheat, lightly yeasty, vanilla, more banana, alcohol, not bad.

Taste is similar, alcohol is up front, big banana and some light spiciness, vanilla, very sweet, brown sugar and honey, yeast, wheat, more banana, more alcohol, some dark fruit, reminds me some of Aventinus.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with medium carbonation. Pretty drinkable but a little too sweet for me I think. Like a poor mans Aventinus which is a compliment.

Part of the Winter 13 mixed pack. nice banana on the nose , quite a dark shade of brown . On the sweetish side this is a decent Weizenbock with a real dry finish after the sweet first note. Not really yeasty enough for me but I still like where Mill st is going with this beer. Satisfying beer for the winter months.

The beer's mucky, muddied tones come to resemble a bloody sangria, its hints of honeyed orange seem resistant to bleeding through even when held directly into the light. The beer's high protein content, responsible for making it so cloudy, can't be faulted. Besides, it's not entirely unclear. The head - rather unrepresentative of the style - is minimal.

This interweaving of yeasty patterns is downright dizzying. Its bouquet is a super phenolic cocktail of spices (including the unusual, but appreciated, note of cumin). Clove, also, is in ample supply. The distinct scent of paprika and honey glazed pecans, as well as red hot sauce, blends in with the more typical notes of bananas, prunes and raisins.

Like its aroma, the beer's flavour is an intoxicating blend of honey and heat. Sweetness and spice. There is plenty of bruised fruity flavour, with emphasis on dried and purplish ones (prunes, raisins). The menu, however, also lists more exotic fruits including notes of grilled pineapple and a few stocks of banana (the above doused in clover honey).

Along with hints of cumin, clove and curried spices there is lots of residual sugariness from the malts. The sweet and the spice mix well. Although the alcohol is hardly noticed, I can't help but feel the body could stand to be a little richer and fuller (for a beer of its strength). Then again, that's the beauty of wheat: a lighter, crisper, creamier texture.

For a long time it looked unlikely that Ontario would ever see a style like weizenbock be produced locally; it was only recently that brewers in this province become willing to try new things and brew bolder, more distinctive beers. This change of heart, I believe there is no doubt, can largely be attributed to the success that Mill Street has had...

Which has come in no small part because of their willingness (and ability) to offer more integral, less common and, frankly, much more interesting beers than its competitors. This weizenbock, albeit not the pinnacle of the style, is indisputably well-made and well worth drinking. I can't wait to fill this growler with other quality Mill Street brew!

Appearance: The body is that opaque brown/red bock colour with noticeable carbonation in the body. A single finger of head was produced that retained well but did not lace.

Smell: High levels of caramel malt with a banana presence with a slightly odd yeasty smell to it. Warming helps bring it out but it was suitably strong after the pour as well.

Taste: The sweet caramel malt give way to a banana and plum taste and touches of fruity yeast before rounding out with a slight alcohol and hop touch. It just seems like it should have more flavour but is seems a bit too restrained.

Mouthfeel: Once again, I'm really surprised at the lack of aftertaste on this one. I mean a slight banana and plum taste lingers, but it's nothing very overt. The carbonation could be a bit more aggressive and pans out near the 1/4 left mark, and the beer seems to jumble itself together as you drink it.

Drinkability: Lighter on the end of medium bodied and easy to drink as it settles down extremely quick for a 7.5% beer. It's has just the barest note of dryness that keeps you wanting more. It's just a shame the carbonation isn't working out so well, as well in turns flat, it's not fun.

Final Thoughts: All in all, a serviceable Weizenbock. I'm probably not being very charitable as Weihenstephaner Vitus is the only other beer of this style I've tried and it blows this stuff out of the water. However there is very little to complain about other then the carbonation is odd really. Give it a whirl.

A Mill St. seasonal that has to be purchased as part of a mixed pack, this weizenbock looks alright poured into a classic German weizen glass, a murky medium brown color with a reasonable amount of tan head. Smells like the expected banana and clove yeast-derived special effects, rather aggressively so, particularly with regards to the banana. I also get another stream of yeasty funk, almost like old leather, and a bright fruity note like red apples. Taste is banana-forward, sweet, rich, and malty, with none of the green/under-aged, woody, hot alcohol flavors I recently got in another domestically brewed weizenbock (see my review of Granville Island's Burly Goat for the sordid details). I get some intriguing chocolate malt flavors that couple with the almost cloying sweet ripe banana to yield a chocolate chip banana bread effect, raisin butter tart, dried plums, and a wheaty white pepper and coriander spice. Semi-thick body with a rather smooth and undercarbonated mouthfeel, with a fruity and spicy wet finish that includes some toasted crust and raisin notes. A fruity and sweet malty rather than super-spicy weizenbock with well-rounded corners ... Sinuous and supple, with no obnoxious traits even if it fails to perfectly capture the German spicy wheat and aggressive phenol profile.

So, Eric calls this Aventinus-lite, and I don't think he's too far off. It certainly has the look of an Aventinus when it arrives at the table. The body is a rich mahogany with a clipped off-white head that leaves some nice streaks of lace on the way down. The aroma is sweet and spicy with a nice wheat backbone. Good banana and clove to it, which I like to see.

Good banana and clove notes hit first, but a tingly sweet spiciness has the driving seat from there on out. There's a decent breadiness, and a pleasant bitter bite in the finish, though all of this seems a bit lighter than it ought to be. The alcohol is well-hidden, but as I drain the last few sips of the pint I can tell its certainly going to work. The body could have a touch more depth to it, and this would probably help amp up the flavours a touch. Still its medium feel and carb are within expectations for the style.

A very solid weizenbock. A bit more depth and richness to the flavour would be more down my alley, but this is a great stab at the style from a local brewer. Nice work, Joel!

Poured into a tulip glass, this produced plenty of creamy yellowish head. Body is a dark ruby brown. Quite cloudy. Head fades down to a film and leaves decent lacing.

S - spicy and estery. clove, bananas, warm estery yeast in evidence, quite a bit of fermentation phenols , also apple, rye bread, breadiness.

T - big hit of banana bread, almost overpowering, some clove and cinnamon, yeasty lemon notes, bready malts with a sweet marmalade sugariness and sweet booze, some raisins. This was really intense on the sweetness and yeast, I found it a bit unbalanced, especially as it wasn't especially high abv, I thought the alcohol was a bit dominant. Sweet creamy wheat and banana throughout, lacks bitterness. Serviceable, but really needs more hops and something to check the booziness.

M - Creamy from the wheat, this is a smooth sipper, body is moderate though, with plenty of booziness coming through. Moderate to light carbonation, this is a quite sweet weizen and is quite cloying on the palate, sticky, but with a nice dark fruit profile.

This holds no water to the German leading weizens. A lot of banana and boozey sweetness and not a lot else really, some spicy phenolics and caramel sugar notes but at the end of the day its not balanced and that really detracts from really getting into it, theres potential to really develop some complexity but its really unrelenting and never lets the nuance develop. If this were my first weizen, the response would be 'interesting idea, but not something to try more of...'
