Poured at the Lunar Brewing Company brewpub into a 9oz. snifter.
Appearance is black, opaque and dense, with an espresso tan head. Excellent, sticky lacing with a milky way galaxy swirl that never fades from the center of the brew.
Aroma is sweet like caramel candy combined with chocolate milkshake flavoring. There is a fruit aroma reminiscent of savory berries. Malts are very high in chocolate, caramel, toffee, and sugar, but the lack of darker malts are off for the style.
Once again a chocolate-toffee with a condensed milk malt in the middle of the palate, though only slightly when it warms. The roasted barley comes out in the background and is appreciated. Alcohol is almost non-existent. Tangy, dry hop aftertaste lending an interesting balance to this Russian Imperial!
Mouthfeel is a little thin for the style, but any thicker would make this brew a too sweet pudding, so the dilemma presents a complex conundrum that is a lot of fun to contemplate.
The brew presents a rarity for many beer drinkers...a session Russian Imperial Stout. Sweet with a small hop bitterness, this beer is a good example of pushing the style.
