Notes/Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter.

We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

12oz bottle. Pours a dark mahogany, not quite opaque. The beige head is two-fingers and fluffy, good retention and ample lacing.

The smell is dominated by bitter coffee, roasted malts, some vanilla, and licorice. The taste somewhat follows the aroma, but it seems lacking flavor, lightweight--there is the coffee, and kind of a choclolately/alcohol finish, but it seems dead and devoid of malt and muscle in the middle.

The mouth is light and bland, somewhat astringent and oily. This porter is tolerable, but I won't be having another.

12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: A finger mocha head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a dark brown black color with little vision of anything when held up to the light. Frothy mocha lacing all the way down the glass.

Smell: Old stale ale, toffee, caramel, a little smoke, chocolate, and some bready toasted malts.

Taste: Cellaring for 6 months has down a great job. Mellowing out of flavors have made this porter have a balance of flavors. Some ashy bitterness blended in there too.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, a little chewy, medium bodied, low to medium carbonation, and mediums little bitterness.

Overall: Pretty nice porter Mainah. Enjoyable and delicious.

Looks, smells, and tastes like a Porter. Nothing special. I can't see giving this any more than a 3, but it isn't awful. The batch I had was way overcarbonated. The head spills from the neck as soon as you pop the top, and I can only fill a glass about 1/4 of the way before having to stop and let the head die down for a few minutes.

All of Atlantics brews are pretty lackluster, and I wouldn't recommend them.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle. Sampled on January 4, 2014.

It looks the way a Porter should look with its jet black pour and long lasting mocha head. I give the look a high grade.

The aroma has a bit of chocolate on the nose with dark malts and a light almost subtle bitter hop quality in the background. Also a tad buttery.

Medium body.

The taste also highlights the chocolate character of the nose with a kind of earthy hop and clean finish at the finale. This is a decent Porter but nothing extraordinary. But still drinkable.
