Notes/Commercial Description:
A light fruit ale, made with Maine wild blueberries. As opposed to many of the sweeter fruit beers on the market, our addition of fresh Maine wild blueberries in this light ale yields a subtle blueberry aroma, without the sweet aftertaste. A mixture of the following Mutton malts, pale, crystal, and Munich, are combined with wheat to give this ale its lighter body, and we only use minimal amounts of Target and Willamette hops.

Bought darlinclemintine a six of this after she said she wanted to try more blueberry beer. We're both weened on beer in the Pacific Northwest, and they don't really "do" the blueberry thing out there. We figured we'd give it a try.

I personally understand quite well why they don't "do" the blueberry thing out there, but that's just me.

The appearance is probably the best part of this beer. A dark amber color. Darker than a lot of its blueberry cohort - at least the ones I've seen. My hopes were up.

Smell is definitely in the blueberry department - but not overwhelming. Still, there is most certainly an essense of blueberry there. Not a whole lot more, though - I expect this to be pretty sweet as there is a little malt there, but I can't really tell because of the blueberries. I guess some people might like that. I'm just sitting here kind of craving a bowl of Boo-Berry.

Everything falls off once it gets in my mouth. Yes, blueberries are there, but there's also a weird sort of woody-cedar thing going on and a bitterness that doesn't seem to be derived from hops. Especially as it warms up, things start to go downhill.

Not a beer I'll be drinking a lot more of. Now what do I do with the other 4 bottles in the fridge?

My favorite blueberry ale; one of the most authentic fruit beers to be had. And as with all authentic offerings, the genius is in its simplicity and subtlety: Unlike other fruit beers that rely on artificial flavorings, this one is has only traces of blueberries in its taste and smell - noticeable but not overpowering enough to be fake. It's beer with a hint of blueberry, not the other way around; the kind of ale that even a no-nonsense ale traditionalist would enjoy.
