Notes/Commercial Description:
With the recent explosion of over-the-top hopped IPAs, we wanted to return to an India Pale Ale that was well-hopped, but still balanced and smooth. Our brewers wanted to name it after one of our hardworking staffers, so we decided to name it after Dave—the new guy. This beer is made with one hundred percent Columbus hops and only one malt, yielding a nice earthy tone and spicy flavors. Columbus hops have a citrusy profile, which is more subtle than that found in most IPAs.

Beer is a hazy coppery amber, with some solids (presumably yeast) suspended in it. Nice aroma: bread, yeast, some grapefruity hops. Taste is malt up front with a nice hoppy finish. Lots of grapefruit rind. The hops are nicely balanced. It is a pretty complex hop profile. Mouthfeel is fine. Overall, an entirely decent IPA. Not overwhelming, not a big hop bomb, but balanced and reasonably complex.

The head crests a little over a finger, off-white, some dimpling but evaporates too swiftly for you to really notice it, the lacing is thin yet does hold onto form broad sheets. The liquid is a rust orange, strong swirling storm of tiny bubbles within, at times they look like a fine sediment, overall looks slightly watery. While the nose has a malty foundation and cocoa, vanilla powder notes, there’s pronounced sourdough bread, quinine, sour lemon peels, iron flecks and lawn grass which stiffens it in your nostrils and closes it down some, not much fruit or other sweeter elements to balance these out. Full-bodied and on the heavy side, curiously based on visual inspection the carbonation is weak hence it doesn’t dance much on the palate. That same metallic bitterness persists here, amplified to distraction. To be fair, the cocoa and caramel also increases and you get a mix of indistinguishable white pit fruit. The citrus is a muddle of white grapefruit and lemon. Leafy without being harshly “green.” The overall dryness leaves your tongue desiccated by the end. Nothing really pleasant enough about it to entice you into finishing the bottle.

Pours a nice clear, kind of burnt-straw color, big head. Smell is beer like, but also a little like scotch. There is some hop presence, but it's mostly bittering hops and it's drowned out by this boozy, scotchy smell/taste. I would never pay money for this, but I've had worse beers.
