I was in Chicago this weekend, and while there I decided to stop in at a liqour store and see if there was anything worth taking home. There was a lot there worth taking home. A whole lot.

The place is just ridiculously huge, like a supermarket. Grab a shopping cart and head over to the beer selection. I was completely overwhelmed and it took me some time to figure out what to buy. Unfortunately they were out of Westy 12, but they did have the 8, so I took home a bottle of that.

The only gripe I have is that some of the bottles were a bit dusty. Otherwise this place lives up to it's ratings. A must stop if you're in Chicago.

Was having lunch across the street and decided to stop in to pick up some local offerings. Plenty of selection, but the beer section was a mess. Half stocked, random dispersion, some stuff looked to be a bit out of date. I did find plenty of interesting offerings, and the prices themselves seemed reasonable, but they definitely will make up for that with some very high shipping rates. I'd probably come back if I was a local, but next time I'm in town I will either ship it myself or try another alternative. Service was very mixed - customer service desk was friendly, the cashier seemed to think my wanting to purchase things was a major inconvenience.

A great store all around, with a nice looking selection of wine and liquor. The beer selection is extensive, though not overwhelming. It has a good collection of regional and national brews, including nearby Goose Island, and Three Floyds. It has a large selection of 22 oz bottles. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. One clerk observed I was browsing the Three Floyds selection and offered to go into the back to break out a bottle of some unusual stuff he had in stock. Very impressive.

I came in here after eating at GI on Clybourn. I was really impressed by the size, and though beer was only a small portion, there was more to choose from than the average store in the area. The beer guy was actually very nice to me, though I'm not sure that everyone gets the same treatment in a place this crowded. He told me beers to avoid that had been on the shelves too long, answered my questions about prices on misplaced or unmarked items, and answered questions about the availability of certain beers. I was very impressed, but if you want personal service, this might not be the easiest place to find it, there was one guy running around and about 30 customers. The selection was huge, as I mentioned before, and I doubt you could get much better - without getting lucky. There were a few things I was hoping to find that were missing, and you can't buy singles - unless the beer is already packaged as such, which always upsets me a bit. Even if there's only a limited number of singles for purchase, it makes it a bit better. Overall a good place to shop, and the prices are right about average for the area, if not a bit less than some of the smaller stores.

I stopped by here to check out the selection, and stock up on stuff I can't get in Minnesota. The selection was very impressive. They have a huge selection of six/four packs. It is probably the largest non singles selection I have seen. The single bottle selection was strong too. I found a number of beers that I have been looking for through out the Midwest for quite some time now. The service was pretty much nonexistent. The guy at the register was friendly, but that is it. Overall, Sam's was well worth the stop, and I'd certainly stop in again.

I visit Chicago many times a year. It's just not a completed visit without a trip to Sams.

The facility is huge. It's almost the size of a Costco and the beer section is like walking into beer heaven! The single largest selection of American and imported beer I've ever seen; others may come close but I've not seen yet a bigger or better or more diverse selection. Admittedly, I'm from Los Angeles and we don't get a lot of great stuff from places other than the west coast. However, while I've purchased on line from places no one or place has been like Sams. (Who, by the way, also does a fantastic job of shipping to me when I order from its website!)

Service is also great. I found a guy working the beer department and we engaged in some great conversation. I mentioned that I was sorry that while they had Dogfish Head they didn't carry the 120. He stopped me, excused himself, went into the back and asked me how many bottles I wanted; they just hadn't yet resocked the shelves.

Prices are fair; they are not one of the "higher priced" places. I visit the store when I can. I visit the website frequently.

One of the top places in the country. In fact, I met the owner one trip when he was bagging wine and beer at a cashier! He was fantastic and literally offered to get me and send me anything I wanted...from Scotch to water! The place is great.

I visit this store every time I go to Goose Island, and sometimes even if I'm not.

I have had great experiences with service here, I am always asked if I need help promptly and when I do am provided with answers to any questions I have.

The selection here is great, there is always a nice rare beer to pick up, which is nice if I don't feel like traveling up to West Lakeview Liquors.

The selection is comparable to West Lakeview Liquors, but they don't get the more rare imports as often.

I really like this store, I am always in here when I know there is a new release and they always have what I am looking for.

Another one of my spots here in Chicago. This place used to be the mecca, but other local spots have caught up. It's a great place to stop and pick up good local/regional beers, especially if you are across the street at Goose.

I've found lately that the service here is pretty poor. Nobody knows much of anything it seems, although they try to be helpful. It's become the Wal-Mart of beer and wine stores (huge selection, though not that deep, mediocre service, but without the deep discounts).

I do love them for wine, though. They are great for the high end bottles, but Wine Discount Center is my favorite place for wine these days.

I stopped in while on foot/public transit and shopping at patagonia and goose island which are both next door. 4 oz samplers at Goose Island = afternoon delight.

For as big as the place is, beer is sort of lost in the mix. They had a couple of Lost Abbey varieties, Port Brewing, and the brand Jolly Pumpkin produces for some Hawaiin-named Michigan brewery (sorry the name escapes me).

They were doing a brisk business on this early Saturday evening and nobody bothered to ask me if I needed any help.

Felt like I was at Walmart. I wound up not returning in my car to stock up for the trip home.

What can I say about Sam's. This is the warehouse of beer. You walk down the aisle and its a ton of stuff. Organized by region and country, its alot of stuff. Service people always seem to be busy stocking stuff on the shelves but are not too busy to offer their help. My opinion is that they are very into their department and know quite a bit. The thing about Sam's is, however, its kind of hit or miss. They don't keep crazy stuff in stock - by that I mean you ask them if they have the new whatever and the answer is usually just whatever is on the shelf is what we have. The cool thing is Goose Island is across the street so they have tons of that stuff. Its not in a great location being on North and Clybourn. I usually go else where because I don't want to deal with the traffic.
