Notes/Commercial Description:
The Big Caboose Red Ale arrived into town November 2011 and has not stopped chugging. A popular and flavoursome Red Ale named after the train that rolls through Fernie sounding its horn as it goes, it's fast picked up steam and has a whole load of party goers jumping on board the Big Caboose. An easy drinking red ale, lightly hopped, slightly sweet with a roasted dryness in the finish, it makes a great new addition to FBC’s current year-round canned line up.

A - nearly clear amber brown, thumb of tan head dissipated to a thin cover with fairly consistent lacing off the bat
S - big sweet and woody malt flavours, light leafiness with a tad of artificialness to it
T - sweet molasses, cedar wood, notes of leafy greens, finishing sugary
M - medium body, stick to your teeth sweet, finishes slightly dry
O - its above average but not by a lot for the style

355ml can. Red train engines, red cabooses, and red ales - a romantic nod to mountain exploration lore.

This beer pours a clear, dark red brick brown colour, with two fingers of tightly foamy, somewhat creamy beige head, which leaves a decent grotto pattern of lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of nutty caramel malt, a bit of semi-sweet chocolate, some middling citrus cream, and musty floral hops. The taste is edgy, mostly dry vanilla pods and caramel malt, a moderated oily nuttiness, and some soft earthy, floral hops.

The carbonation is moderate, and more silky than prickly, as the body works it with some healthy, solid medium weight curves, further enshrined by a sturdy smoothness. It finishes fairly off-dry, the nutty, sweet vanilla and caramel ceding hardly an inch.

Again, a new-fangled Canadian amber ale that raises the oh-so-low bar for this typically underwhelming regional style. Tasty malt, no off-flavours, and a subtle, honesty-enforcing hoppiness. A canned offering worthy of six-pack wasteland planning, for mountain and lake excursions alike.

355ml can poured into pint glass 14/10/11

A clear reddish brown with just a few bubbles feeding a finger of tan foam that leaves a few partial rings of lace

S quite nutty, mild chocolate and some herbal leafy hops

T mimics the smell quite well but even nuttier

M fairly light with more bubbles then expected based on what I saw in the glass

O OK beer, more of a nut brown too me but what do I know

nothing worth searching for but the brewer has nothing to be ashamed of either

On Point for this style, good malt balance with the hops working in concert, nice thickish mouthfeel and a great drinkability. The facts it is in cans and you have a great session beers that should find some new friends. Fernie seems to be on the move with a nice Pale Ale and decent IPA.
