Visited on 4/11/2013. Fourth and final stop on my alt tour. Served in a .2l stange. Pours an amber hue with a loose, quarter inch, bright white head. Copious strands of lacing are evident during the tasting. Nose is malty with a hint of skunk. Taste reveals more hops character than malt; however, more balanced than the altbier from Schumacher. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body, but closer to light, with an even carbonation and a crisp finish. Overall, a solid alt - balance is slightly shifted to the hops end of the spectrum; however, the beer is tasty and easy drinking. The carbonation level adds a nice character to this beer.

A lively brewpub in the Altstadt. Classic regional experience with the quarter liter pours ticked on a coaster and quick refills (actually quite slow but they were busy…they also ask if you want another which should be implied but tourists likely don’t know to put the coaster on top of the glass when they’re done). Anyway, this is pretty standard Altbier, which is to say, absolutely delicious and I wish we had this style of beer regularly available in the US. Sweet, malty goodness with a great finish and a noticeable caramelized character with a slightly charred malt flavor. So damn drinkable. Not the best in Düsseldorf but great nonetheless.

Update: was surprised to see this at the huge liquor store I occasionally visit when I rent a car and can head across town north of Stuttgart to Kornwestheim. Cases of e0,5l swing-top bottles and this one is dated best by 13.03.24. A little too tight (less than a month), but nearly as good as I remember. Just cannot beat beer on draft anywhere in the world. Great roasted malt character. Very unique style. Some versions of Altbier seem to be the step right before Rauchbier.

Poured at fridge temp. Pours a dark brown with a thin layer of head. The nose is malty bread, chocolate, wheat, toffee, and some nice mild dark fruit. Lovely nose. The taste is light with notes of wheat, malts, figs, chalk, a touch of smoke, slight hoppy note, and a really interesting floral note. Dry. Aftertaste is mostly bitter. Some roasty notes linger. Overall, a great beer.

Brauerei Im Füchschen “Fuchschen Alt”
,5L flip-top brown glass bottle coded “Mindestens haltbar bis: / Abgefüllt am: 23.10.21/23.08.21”.

The most floral and fruity of all the Düsseldorfer altbiers, as well as the least caramelish. It’s a clear mahogany brown beneath a full head of off-white. The head drops to a short but solid cap but continues to leave broken sheets and rings of lace throughout. The aroma is bright and fresh with floral and fruity character that masks the malt beneath - impressive! The flavor delivers the expected nutty, medium-dark caramel drizzled maltiness but it’s not as rich as most, and the floral and fruity notes found in the aroma carry over. There are also some grassy, herbal, and spicy hops and it has a dry, bitter finish that fades leaving some dark fruitiness behind. It’s not as bitter as some, and in my mind, better rounded and balanced. Medium bodied leaning towards medium-light with a crisp, fine-bubbled and seemingly natural carbonation. Everyone has different tastes (heavier and more bitter at Uerige for example), but I doubt that anyone would argue that this isn’t one of the finer Düsseldorfer altbiers.

5l keg, 1 m old.

Clear dark brown, no ruby notes. Quickly dispersing head.

Nose is unexpectedly fruity, I even get flowery and berry notes of the more perfumed kind. Or maybe the honeyed kind of fresh wort notes are particularly aromatic. Nothing like a tropical IPA or brett, but distinctive. Some dark fruit and a bit of light chocolate.

Taste is perfectly rounded and yet entertainingly complex. Toasted and nutty notes are the most prominent with some counterweight by hops, and a bready note running throughout. Longish aftertaste of grain.

The all-around champion of alts (that I have tasted). A textbook example of how to make a smooth but intriguing beer.

"The" Alt for every Altbier lover. A perfectly rounded taste. It is a little bit less bitter than the Uerige, and has, in comparison to the, also quite excellent, Schumacher or Schlüssel, a perfectly fullbodied taste.

Within all the beers i ever had the chance to taste, this is my undisputed number 1!

Clear dark amber; huge fresh bread + honeyed granola nose with spearmint underneath; brown pan crust, some toffee, hints of walnut + cherry, and a hit of grass + flowers; lively, clean + dry with a numbing IBU linger.

Nothing better than the real thing: nose jumps out of the glass, malts are deep enough to reach your neck + the hops hit as hard as any pils. Maybe a bit sweeter + low on melanoidins than I’d like for my alts. But so easy to gulp; I’d drink a barrel of this.

Pours a clear, mahogany coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of bready, grainy, slightly roasted malt and herbal, slightly floral hops, with hints of nutty accents. Taste is a great balance of bready, grainy, slightly roasted malt and herbal, slightly floral and spicy hops, with hints of red berries and nuts also coming through. Taste is a great balance of bready, grainy malt and herbal. slightly floral hops, with hints of red berries and nuts also coming through, as well a certain mineral note. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some grainy malt, herbal hops and certain mineral note lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

Füchschen is a fine Alt, but that combination of slightly more grainy malt, floral hops and certain mineral quality creates a flavor profile that I'm personally not too keen on. It also almost completely lacks that slight caramel sweetness that most of the other Düsseldorf Alts have to them and is a bit more heavy on the red berries. Actually it kinda sits inbetween Uerige and Schlüssel for me, but feeling sort of neither here nor there. While I would happily drink this anytime, I would prefer almost any of the other Düsseldorf Alts to it personally, as this just seems a little less rich and well-balanced. Overall, this makes for a fine Alt that is a bit too grainy and floral for my personal taste though, while feeling not quite as rich and well-balanced as the other Düsseldorf Alts.
