Has a huge, froth, bubbly head, with a clear brown color, in which ember hints shine through.

Smells of fresh, skunky yeast with sweeter, cane sugary, notes of malt, as well as rustic bread.

Tastes much dryer, and more balanced than the aromas revealed. Starts bready, accompanied by semi-dry, slightly bitter hops, which stay in the background though, to allow the malts to unfold in all its beauty. Drinks very smooth and turns a little more sweeter, in a toffeish way, without loosing its bready, slightly toasted foundation. Finishes crisp, very balanced, with hops and malts standing in perfect balance to each other.

Appearance: foamy white head, copper brown color, good clarity

Aroma: toasty malt aroma, slight nut character, subtle noble hop aroma

Taste: toasty, nutty, slight dark fruit hints, noble hop finish, everything you can ask for in an altbier

Mouthfeel: medium body (lighter than Uriege and Schlossel, equal to Kurzer, slightly heavier than Schumaher, medium carbonation, lager crispness

Overall Impression: the best of the altbiers in Dusseldorf in my opinion. It combines a medium body, all the nutty and toasty character you want exhibited, restrains but still exhibits dark fruit hints, and finishes with moderate carbonation and a spicy noble hop bite. The original and the best!

Visited on 4/11/2013. Fourth and final stop on my alt tour. Served in a .2l stange. Pours an amber hue with a loose, quarter inch, bright white head. Copious strands of lacing are evident during the tasting. Nose is malty with a hint of skunk. Taste reveals more hops character than malt; however, more balanced than the altbier from Schumacher. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body, but closer to light, with an even carbonation and a crisp finish. Overall, a solid alt - balance is slightly shifted to the hops end of the spectrum; however, the beer is tasty and easy drinking. The carbonation level adds a nice character to this beer.

On-tap at Fuchschen itself, on to the beer:

This alt is copper colored and topped with a long lasting creamy head. Lots of lace sticking to the glass follows after each sip. The nose is very toasty and bready, warming and hearty. The toastiness is strong in the beer's taste, and very pronounced. There are notes of bread crust and a little bit of toffee to compliment the toast. It's medium bodied with a sip of carbonation, a bit hearty for a 4.5% ABV beer.

This is a dandy, spot on alt.

I can't believe this is so far down the list of Alts. This is such a fantastic Alt. Big red color, fantastic malt character and hops and a nice finish. I've been lucky enough to have this at the source in Dusseldorf. So good. I wish I could have a growler of this right now.

Pours a clear-copper in color, accented by brassy highlights. Brilliant clarity, and topped with a two-fingered frothy head of uniform density. Excellent head retention. Magnificent-looking beer!

Abundant lacing remains as the head falls, and a thin film is left atop the remaining beer long into the drink.

Nose is bright, sharply-hopped, and lightly metallic. "Malt-forward" if you will, but a diffuse rather than a distinct malt profile, as it is semi-sweet but with smokey (!) notes, toffee and cocoa/chocolate noted, as well as a very light mineral character as well as a slightly herbal character hiding behind all of this horseplay. WOW!

There's almost a 'Rauchbier' character going on in the nose, and it plays out more notably in the palate.

Sweet, lightly-tangy and malt driven on the first sip. The hop character on the nose was indistinct but sharp, and thus here on the palate it's very subtle but assiduous, lingering behind the malt complexity and lasting throughout the drink.

Chocolate undertones play out amid the light smokiness and really give you a reason to sip, savor, and enjoy this one, even though it's an extremely smooth bier, and very, very easy-drinking. Feels nothing like the 4.5% ABV across the palate, either...

The lingering bitterness is all the more impressive considering the round sweetness of the malt character and especially considering those chocolate notes -- near-perfect balance. Edit: Ever-so-slightly-lactic: Milk sugar?

Incredibly smooth and soft on the palate, medium-bodied...

Truly a wonderful beer, and as I hear-tell it's considered by many locals to be the best Altbier in Düsseldorf.

Final Note: I'd say that it's fairly difficult to judge this one based upon a single flip-top bottle, but it is one of the best Altbiers I have had the pleasure of sampling. This bottle was brought to me (in the U.S.) by a friend, and was only a week out of the bottle house. According to the label, it had only 1 month between it's Bottled-On and Best-By date. Amazing stuff!
