From BeerAdvocate Magazine #89 (June 2014):

Bitter, Light, Trendy

Without a doubt this substyle of the IPA is one of THE trends of 2014. Farmer’s Tan runs well within the same vein being light bodied with an overly aggressive hoppiness for its size. Any easy hop fix without paying the toll of being a bigger beer though these beers tend to be less interesting, sort of a one sided brew.

Not a huge fan of overly hoppy beers, but this was solid. A - warm rich amber look. S - floral, similar to a huma luma liscous. T - hoppy, not too bitter of a bite. M - Thick and creamy O - up there as one of my favorite IPA's, slowly starting to like IPA'S, will have to try this again.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep amber orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Big three finger off white head with decent retention. Leaves a good amount of clingy lacing.

Smell: A floral and juicy hop forward aroma with hints of citrus and grass. Citrus hops with some hints of orange peel, grapefruit, lemon, pineapple, and melon. Earthy and floral hops with some hints of damp grass and pine resin. Soft malt backing with hints of grains, biscuit, straw, cracker, and yeast. A pretty solid aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a floral and fairly juicy hop forward taste with notes of citrus fruit and grass. Earthy, floral, and herbal hop presence with notes of wet grass and slightly spicy pine. Citrus hop notes of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, melon, and pineapple. Pale malt in the background with notes of grains, cracker, biscuit, straw, and yeast. A pretty nice laid back session IPA taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Nicely crisp, juicy, and drying on the finish.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a session IPA. Lighter but still has a good citrus and grassy hop presence.

Looks great in the glass, I was super psyched to see a new Southern Tier brew under 5% abv Farmer's Tan marketed as a session IPA all the breweries are doing it c'mon man show me the the hops lite.

Well this one looks great, copper semi haze big ol' khaki colored head with chunky sporadic bands of lacing left on my chalice. Speckled with yeast particles hanging around in a suspension like manner. I don't mind the bottle conditioning, a good feature for such a delicate beer.

Let's get our noses into this one, nice big grapefruit citric nose with some herbal earthy dankness I like the combo only two hop varieties no clue on the hops used in this one. A bit of pale biscuit malts in the backend amongst the lite hop characters going on, no perceived sweetness just some grain and bready character.

Flavors have some unique hop notes, quite an aggressive punch of hop bitterness right off the bat. Yeast character brings some bready quality, pale malts are pretty clean, not much fruitiness. Citric rinds, floral earthy hop flavors add to the complexity but a clean lite hop finish.

Texture wise much lighter than your average IPA ample carbonation, light to medium bodied low level of slick hop oils really easy and refreshing to consume...I'm glad they revived the Farmer's Tan name considering the imperial pale lager a few years back left a lot to be desired.

Overall I'm intrigued by this beer and I'm definitely glad I picked up a whole sixer, it was worth the $9.99 investment seems like this one will perform well in the warmer seasons approaching.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Bottled 3/12/14

A: Pours a clear golden amber with a white head on top. The head sticks around for a while and leaves spots of lacing on the glass. Some visible floaties in the body.

S: Nice hop aroma permeates the smell. Floral and citrus notes along with some earthiness. Malts are just a hint in the background giving a bit of breadiness.

T: Hop forward flavor that doesnt dominate with bitterness. Focus is really on the hop with a very mild maltiness. Lingers with an earthy hop flavor well into the aftertaste. Lots of flavor for being so light.

M: Light body with a bit of creaminess to it. Crisp clean finish keeps this one very easy drinking.

Overall I am a fan of this offering. Very light and easy drinking with a good deal of hop character. Something that is perfect for the summer.
