Southern Tier Old Man....on tap at Dark Horse in NYC....
Appearance-a light to medium yellow body with a two to three finger head. The carbonation is very active and the head tops off nicely.
Smell-very piney hops, are they trying to make it smell like a Christmas tree because if so they did a decent job. The hops outweigh the other quieter smells of alcohol and breaded malt.
Taste/Mouthfeel-again the hops pull through strongly, medium to heavy mouthfeel, nice smoothness with a little malt backbone that adds some nice balance. For how strong this beer is it's impressive that the alcohol is fairly well hidden and doesn't dominate. You'd rather have the hops take the lead here than the alcohol.
Overall-a nice beer, as others have noted I'm not so sure it's really much of an old ale but it's a flavorful hoppy beer with some nice characteristics. Worth a try.
Serving type: on-tap
