Iowa never has been able to get too many Imperial Stouts. Whenever I see one, I have to try it. To date, I can only think of two or three that have come across our borders.

This beer ours very, very dark. I couldn't even seen light through the stream coming out of the bottle. The head was not overwhelming but was a beautiful dark tank. It went away to a thin layer and lace stayed on the side of the glass quite nicely.

The nose is sweet, chocolate and caramel.

Taste is quite strong. Chocolate, burnt, malt with a little sweetness yet it is not overly thick tasting. As I drink this beer it seems to mellow a little and is pretty easy to drink despite the strong ABV. Mouth feel has a little bite but is really smooth to the tongue. Overall, a very appealing beer.

Black in body with cinnamon head. Weak aroma of oats and alcohol. A great taste of oats, malt, slight roast, milk chocolate, alcohol. Heavy body with a lingering malty sweet aftertaste. The alcohol isn't obnoxious but hides in the back of your head. A very nicely done heavy ale.

This is a pitch black beer with a bubbly & tan shot lived head.
No lacing of my glass. Maybe there's some detergent residues on the glass.

The nose smacks of alcohol and some hops with a wisp of toasted malt.

The flavor is where this wonderful beer shines.

The first thing is the mouthfeel- almost an oil like character- not revolting but the liquid has viscosity that coats my palate with its imperial stance. The flavor is an over all balance of hops and toasted malts. I taste hits of coffee and caramel washed clean by the bitter hops. It's a big up front flavor that lasts and lasts.
Yep, it fits the IMPERIAL stamp-- including the ABV factor.

This could likely be a "stealth beer"-- that is at 9.6% ABV it can easily creep up on one's constitution- I would readily open another pint (but I know I shouldn't) because this one goes down so easily while I'm in IMPERIAL STOUT heaven.

Nice beer and worth your while to check it out.

On tap at Beer Run, Charlottesville, VA. Served in a 10 oz. snifter.

Appearance: Gorgeous lacing, gorgeous body, gorgeous head with great retention ... what's not to love about this one?

Aroma: Very interesting, actually. Much crisper, lighter, more citrus than I detected in the bottle. There's also plenty of dark, heavily roasted malts and some spicy alcohol.

Taste: Wholesome toasted malts, with a nice full-bodied quality that almost certainly comes from the oats, a lot of nuttiness, full roast coffee, milky bakers chocolate, a hefty spicy, lightly citrus-y hoppiness, some salty notes, and a soupcon of alcohol as things warm, though it's definitely not prominent. A bit of a step down from the bottled version, in my opinion.

Mouthfeel: Perfectly-bodied, with immaculate smoothness, a great carbonation level, no cloying notes, and not nearly as thick or sticky as I remember the bottle being.

Drinkability: Better than the bottle in some ways and worse in others. The taste and aroma seem to be dominated less by whatever tastes/aromas you would imagine would constitute an Imperial Oatmeal stout and more by fruity, nutty, and (potentially) some funky off flavors, though could just be my keg. A friend detected sunflower seeds, and I get way too much orange peel. On the other hand, appearance (a perfect pour will do that) and mouthfeel are a little improved, so I think it's a wash. Give it a shot either way. Recommended.

Ink black with no head.
Smells sweet, dark fruits, oats, malts and some coffee or cocoa bitterness at the back.
The coffee is more pronounced in the taste and a smokiness joins in as well. It's still sweet but it's balanced nicely with the bitterness. Alcohol is just not noticeable at all and I was surprised to see 10.8% ABV when I checked the bottle.
The mouthfeel is very creamy and smooth with medium carbonation, really good.

Overall, definitely a good stout and I'm happy I still have about 2/3rds of my 65cl bottle left. ^^

Pours a deep brown color with a generous chocolate head that diminishes quickly, leaving a little lacing. Aroma is of roasted malt oatmeal and caramel. Chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla and oatmeal flavor. Good mouthfeel. Slightly carbonated. Nice finish

Appearance. Pours a slightly thick, deep cola brown with a small dark tan head that doesn't last long.

Smell. Nice chocolate, some roasty malt, some graham crackers.

Taste. Sweet dark chocolate, molasses, dark bakers chocolate and coffee in the end. Just a little bit of acidity present.

Mouthfeel. Pretty full body with low+ carbonation. Just a little warmth.

Overall. Good beer, but maybe not quite as much for the style. I'd drink it again, for sure.

This beer pours a beautiful jet black, it looks super viscous like old motor oil. Almost no head at all, with the oatmeal I would have thought there would be at least some head retention. The beer smells absolutely beautiful. Like bittersweet chocolate and espresso, with some caramel and molasses notes. You get a hint of the alcohol, but not too much it just lets you know it is there. This beer smells really fantastic. Taste is a lot of the same. It tastes like black, whatever that means. Basically like dark dark chocolate, espresso, molasses and a little bit of dried fig or prune flavors. The beer is very sweet, but there is a noticeable bitterness in the background. I would have preferred it to be a bit less sweet, it was bordering on cloying. Mouthfeel was viscous. You could feeel it coat you palate as it swirled around, almost like cough syrup. The drinkability suffered a bit do to the extreme sweetness. However, it was still an extremely enjoyable experience. Overall a wonderful beer.

Pours dark as hell and thick as hell. No visible head.

Smell - bakers chocolate, roasted oats. I get some oakyness and vanilla. No hint of alcohol.

Taste - yum! Follows the nose and the chocolate and roasted oats runs laps on my palate. More burnt chocolate in the finish. Lots O chocolate in this one.

Mouthfeel - smooth with just enough carbonation.

Overall - its very nice!! I like

Poured into a snifter. Jet black with just a thin ring of foam.

Don't really know what to expect from this "Imperial Oatmeal Stout." Aromas of dark chocolate and sweetness from some fruity esters. There may be just a touch of molasses or maple in there as well.

Taste is a burst of dark chocolate up front. Subdued sweetness takes point on this one. The high ABV provides some warmth to go with the smoky, bitter finish. This is one big beer.

Mouthfeel has that smooth, silky, thick oatmeal finish I was looking for. Drinkability is decent for the style, but I would definitely only have one in a sitting.

A - Black as death, no light gettin through here. Head faded to a ring with a few wisps of dark brown on the surface. Small dots of lacing.

S - Rich dark caramel, bitter licorice, some light chocolate and light vanilla.

T - A light bitterness starts us out, pronounced licorice tastes and some old coffee come shortly after. Big toasted malts: earthy, creamy, sweet & smoky. Short undertones of chocolate then a lasting finish of sweet creamy malts.

M - Thick, very smooth and very viscous with little carbonation.

D - A meal of a beer.

Jan 14 notes, poured into a Corsendonk tulip.

Poured pitch black with no head and little to no lacing. There was a thin head that was there briefly and disappeared almost immediately, as was expected like most bigger stouts that I have come across. Smelled very sweet with a back hint of malt, chocolate, and oats. Smelled no booze in this and was mouth watering to me.
Upfront taste was very malty to me. That thrown in with the great taste of the chocolate mixed in. At the backend of this, I tasted oat coming through. This was a medium-heavy bodied beer with little carbonation. The ABV is well hidden so beware!

22oz bottle served in a snifter.

the pour is a bit lighter than your typical imperial stout motor oil black, not totally opaque, but remains a very dark brown. aggressive pour yields a finger and a half of a foamy tan head; middling retention, some lacing. nose is good but not great - definitely not as aromatic as choklat (but then, few are). i pick up notes of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, molasses, oats, and a touch of booze.

flavor mostly follows the aroma. very tasty beer with plenty of roastiness, chocolate, coffee, and oats. a bit of caramel, maybe a touch of a vague hoppy presence in the background. mouthfeel is medium-full with adequate carbonation.

overall i think this is an excellent beer, very tasty and enjoyable. won't challenge any of my personal favorites for imperial stout supremacy, but one i would not hesitate to revisit in the future.

Pours just about pitch black. Not too much head or lacing. Smells quite chocolatey. Roasted malts, a bit of alcohol. Very big scent. Some good chocolate flavors on the taste as well. Nice smooth oatmeal feel. Roasted malts, coffee, vanilla, and a mild hop flavor. Mmmm.

A big imperial oatmeal stout. Very nice offering from this brewery, who has become a major player in these various imperial stouts.

Pours opaque black with highlights of deep rich brown on the edges. Not much head, what did form was nice and tan, but quickly died down - not much carbonation. After a few minutes and a few sips there is completely no sign of foam, the beer looks deceptively placid.

The smell is fantastic. Big notes of chocolate, sweet dark fruit and some hints of alcohol are very pronounced with underlying aromas of coffee.

Taste is similar to the smell in that the chocolate and dark fruit are very rich and pronounced. There is a big chocolate, molasses and fruit sweetness up front followed by some heat from the alochol, which at 11% is still pretty masked. The finish exhibits some of the coffee character.

Overall a remarkable beer. The mouth feel is very silky and creamy, but not too syrupy and viscous. The alcohol packs a punch but is still well hidden. Chalk another one up to Southern Tier.

Bottle poured into a tulip and enjoyed on 6/27/12

Pour: Pitch black with a light brown, inch head. Fades to a rim around edges.

Smell: Dark chocolate and a little booze, but not a ton.

Taste: Really tastes like a double oatmeal stout. Bitter dark chocolate with a very roasty with a light espresso aspect thrown in. Slight booze.

Mouthfeel: Creamy with a light warming.

Overall: Tasty and nearly always on shelves in NJ right now. While not jaw dropping, if nothing piques my interest and I'm in the mood for a strong oatmeal stout, I would happily turn to this brew.

This beer pours a thick used motor oil black. The head is one inch in height, and recedes quickly into minimal lacing. The aroma is milk chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla and hints of coffee. The taste is like the aroma, but with everything a little more pronounced. There is also a lingering, moderate bitterness in the aftertaste. The mouthfeel is perfect for an imperial stout, or any other stout for that matter. It is full bodied with a silky texture, and appropriately low carbonation. Overall, this is a very nice beer. It doesn't wow me the way Creme Brulee Stout did, but it is good on its own merits.

Pours a very nice stout. Thin lacy mocha brown head with a close to but not quite motor oil black maybe a hint of brown.

Distinct rich coffee malty smell and a little hint of dark fruits.

The taste is spot on for the style. Espresso malts followed by a little dark chocolate bitterness.

All in all nothing that breaks the mold of a good Imperial stout, but a very well crafted offering from southern tier none the less.

11% abv. Brewed in Fall 2007. Demon-blood black with a thin burnt-orange head that quickly vanishes into a ring. Dark-chocolate-dipped blackberry aromas with a slightly menacing undercurrent of alcohol vapor. The oil-slick texture carries a cacophony of juicy dark fruit flavors: black cherries, burnt currants, earthy and coniferous hop spice, charred grain, and silky booze. The latter is deftly hidden amongst the wall of flavor this stout presents, but its warming effect is nearly immediately noticeable both in the stomach and in the cheeks. A sipper for certain. A solid effort, but less than awesome all the same.

2007, listed at 11% abv. Poured black, and a bit undercarbonated. Thick and viscous with bubbles slow to form. Little head. The initial smell is of alcohol, followed by sweet malt, an underlying bitterness, and perhaps a bit of light roastiness as well. The taste is a little hot as well, also quite bitter, a tad undercarbonated. But there are very good flavors of coffee, molasses, and a roasted graininess. The mouthfeel is smooth and sweet. This beer didn't blow me away. I really think it needs more time in the bottle to mellow and integrate flavors a bit more and to tame some of the sweetness. Not bad now, but probably could be better.

I'm not sure I've ever had an Imperial Oatmeal Stout, but I'm looking forward to the experience as Southern Tier has yet to disappoint me.

This one pours a viscous black used motor oil. Pours like syrup and unfortunately generates no head. I was afraid I was going to have to squeeze the bottle to get everything out. Of course no head means no lacing.

Smells like chocolate. More chocolate than any Imperial Stout I've ever experienced. No hop bitterness as in your standard Imperial Stout. This one seems to be pure sweetness. With the chocolate are hints of coffee, but there is no roasted or burnt qualities like other stouts. A hint of anise spicing.

Sipping reveals the bitterness that was lacking in the nose, but I'm getting ahead of myself as that’s on the finish. This is lip smacking good! Tastes of sweet chocolate, but not in a cocoa sense and instead of a creamy chocolate. After warming to a temperature closer in range of 55 to 60 Fahrenheit instead of the suggested 48 Fahrenheit I find more of the caramel flavors I thought were initially missing. The sweetness evolves into a spicier flavoring and reminds me more of a Belgian Imperial Stout with a hint of anise. Finish consists of an alcohol and hop bite.

Mouthfeel is stupendous and is the most fascinating aspect of this beer. Extremely viscous, thick and amazingly smooth makes sipping this beer very enjoyable. Very low amounts of carbonation enhance the mouthfeel. Drinkability is dangerously high for this brew, but I will note that the bottle marks this one at 11% rather than the 12.5% listed on Beeradvocate. Highly recommended stout as we move into the colder months.

From bottle with no date. Poured into my scotch glass as it's the closest thing I have to a snifter.

A: Pitch black with no sign of a head. Looks like flat soda.

S: Sweet chocolate with oats coming through. This smells great, sweet with a slight dark chocolate coming through. Very good!

T: Sweet chocolate upfront with a bitter thick dark chocolate coming through at the end and a nice dry finish from the oats. This is sweet, but sweet done right.

M: Thick and syrupy with slight carbonation.

O: This is really sweet, but good at the same time. There's a good balance of sweet up front with a nice bitter dry finish. This is definitely worth trying.

Bottle. Pours a solid black with a creamy, tan head. Lots of chocolate, roasted malts, and oats. Wonderful smell with a taste to match. Full body with a rich, smooth mouthfeel. I could definitely drink this with breakfast. If I could only find a way to make my coffee pot brew one cup of beer at a time.

L: Burnt, dark, roasted coffee with 0.25 fingernail pour.

S: Mix of sweet, caramel, vanilla with a hint of roasted malt.

T: Smoked cocoa combined with sweet vanilla bean. Very sweet. Well-balanced and smooth.

M: Light carbonation for the style, but smooth and crisp.

O: Well put-together and nice. I really enjoyed this treat and love to get my hands on ST brews! Well done.

My bottle says this is 11% strong.
Oat is good, solid and tasty in every which way. I don't think I've really cared for oatmeal stoats a whole lot before but this one clearly works when doubled up.
Sweetness is strong and a little bit cloying by itself, but when paired with dark, bitter chocolate this beer is a beautiful dream. The coffee character, as well as the slight oatmeal notes harmonizes in a delicious way.
Wait for this fellow to warm up. All of its goodness will show itself when closer to room temperature. This isn't very very special, in my opinion, but it's very good. Considering the very competitive category this holds its own very well. Oat ought to be included in a double stout side by side.
