'Tis "black as a moonless night," but the tan head resembles more of a sun-soaked Irish girl than perhaps a California blonde. In other words, it's white with only a tinge. The nose, as you'd expect, is oaty. In this world of evermore, I can't help but want chocolate and coffee. Oh how I love beer and coffee....

Love the smooth oaty feel. I bet I could put my own sunburned Scotch-Irish ass in a tub full of this and it'd soothe and heal me! There is a bit of harshness in the aftertaste especially, a measure of this abv. Why's it got to be so strong, anyway? Oh yeah...evermore.

I taste oats. Go figure. I taste Willamette hops. Are they white? For a beer so dark, it tastes so pale. It's a bit of a disappointing dichotomy. It's like the bitter hops only prevent a sweet-candied, molassy mess. It's strong, and mostly smooth, but it's ehh.... There's just nothing neat about. To be frank, it's forgettable.

Kind of hankering for a good stout, I'm sure this one will due.

Pours good with a two finger thick light brown colored head, and has a black colored body that shows off dark ruby red hues when held up to direct sunlight.

The aroma is woody, coffee, and burnt toast.

The taste is awesome. Sweet vanilla bean, dark chocolate, and fig.

Mouth feel wise, it's lightly carbonated, oily slick and smooth with a bit of alcohol warmth.

Pours a very deep brown, almost black, but some brown highlights are noted against the light. A big tan head. Smells extremely malty. Tobacco, chocolate and charcoal on the nose. Some french toast present as well.

Not as big of a body as expected but still pretty big. Chewy and chocolaty with a touch of caramel. Good amount of hop presence balances everything out. Well blended flavors. Very solid beer that holds together extremely well.

A slight fruitiness comes forward after a bit bringing about a chocolate covered raisin type deal. Kind of like Raisin bran. Balance is amazing.

Definitely a beer that could be had for breakfast. Amazing beer, but I prefer Choklat.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a thick, pitch-black with a small half-finger brown head. Very small amount of lacing left on the glass.

Smell: Dark malts, raisins and prunes, caramels, oats, cherries, overall dark fruity.

Taste: Very nice. Sweet malts in the forefront, with a roasty attribute. Chocolate and caramel penetrate the backend, with a definite oat based taste and light hoppy character. The alcohol is discernible, but definitely not overbearingly so. There is almost a creamy/milky character to the taste, it's divine.

Mouthfeel: Low carbonation and heavy body, very rich and creamy, it would be a sipper but it's so damn good!

Overall: I was expecting my first offering from Southern Tier to be good based on their reputation for good brewing, but this blew me away. An amazing oatmeal stout that sweet-tooths and hop heads alike could enjoy.

A – Light khaki head towers above the glass. Fantastic retention and nice lace. Dark brown/black body.

S – Light raisin, tart red wine, light oat, and lactose sugar.

T – Acidic coffee and a dry red wine fruitiness. Semi-sweet oat center. Rolling malt and dark chocolate backend. Acidity shows up again on the finish.

M – Thick, smooth, full roasty body.

O – A bit acidic and not what I expected out of an oatmeal stout, but the profile definitely grew on me throughout the night.

Poured into a snifter this stout pours jet black with a moderate tan head that diminished to a thin skim and left a few wisps of lace. The aroma is moderately roasty, bittersweet chocolate, with hints of booze and spicy hops. The flavor is very malty--roast and bittersweet. The beer warms the belly and is velvety smooth. The carbonation is moderate and body silky full. Overall a tremendous stout-recommend.
