Poured from a deuce-deuce into a half-liter tapered glass.
Appearance: Pours a cloudy caramel/amber color, two-fingered head recedes somewhat quickly leaving heavy lacing on the glass. Final millimeter of head is strong and does not dissipate at all. Lots of active carbonation.
Smell: Lots of caramel in the nose, massive amounts of floral hops and a prune-like alcohol afterburn. Definitely enticing.
Taste: Killer. In a good way. Sweetness at first, probably caramel malt. An almost buttery flavor holds the brew together. This is followed closely behind by a fist-full of very flowery hop action. Only a touch of bitterness, which is surprising; it's a welcome twist on a classic idea.
Mouthfeel: Heavily tingly at first, a lot of bite to this brew. Carbonation is great here. It mellows out very, very slowly, challenging you to find every flavor you can in the taste. Works well for this brew.
Drinkability: If it didn't cost me an hour's pay for one double-deuce bottle, I'd probably drink it every day. Scratch that...if I got seven extra hours a week, I'd probably drink it every day. :-) Very good. I will come back to this one in the future.

I loved the oaked version of this ale so I thought I'd try its originator. This one pours a beautiful hazy copper color with a thick off white head that gives way to a nice film and lacing. The nose is malty with a slight hoppy bitterness. This bottle was born more than a year ago so the hop notes have subsided and left a rich malty beer almost reminiscent of a scotch ale more than an ipa. The flavor further confirms this opinion. Id love to try a fresh bottle of this ale because even an older one is impressive.
