Glad to be able to buy these in anchorage now.

Pours a not as deep as expected reddish orange amber color. Totally clear. Good fluffy white head hangs around for a while and leaves pretty good lacing. Color is way light though.

Nose is promising, as this one seems to have a significant enough hop presence. There is some sugar rock candy sweetness in the nose, but the hops are the most noticeable attribute. Nothing balls out or amazing though.

Taste is pretty clean. The hops are there, but not as strong as they would be in, say, a DIPA. The malt balances nicely, slightly maltier than my taste desires, but for the style this is about dead on. The hops are nice and spicy in character, with relative bitterness, but once again, this isnt a total palate thrasher. The malt profile does have a little bit of "old IPA" malt akwardness to it, but overall is very decent. Dry finish, and lingering bitterness are on the finish.

Mouthfeel is pretty solid. Could be just a touch thinner i think, but the carbonation is dead on.

Drinkability is very solid for the abv, as the alcohol heat is really well hidden. However, the extra thickness, and slightly too sweetness of this one hamper it just a touch.

Overall I like this brew, it is certainly drinkable and is representative of the style. Although, I think this one could be greatly improved upon with just a few tweaks here and there. I think the malt profile needs a bit of tinkering with. A very drinkable brew, but not one i would rave about. Good beer.

A: Pours a cloudy golden amber with a tight, clinging white head.

S: Aromas of caramel, heavy cream, biscuit, grass, lemon, straw, wildflowers, herbs, and mild spices are present on the nose.

T: Notes of lemon, orange, herbs, grass, straw, honey, flowers, and spices give way to notes of caramel, toffee, cream, biscuit, nougat, and roasted nuts. The finish is smooth and mild with a pleasant combination of caramel, cream, biscuit, honey, grass, herb, and lemon flavors.

M: Full in body and neither dry nor sticky. Carbonation is simultaneously delicate and firm. Alcohol presence is very subdued.

O: An awesome amber/red ale. Well-balanced for such a big, robust beer.

Pours hazy amber with a small off white head, which has decent retention and lacing. The aroma has spicy hops, some earth, grass, and biscuit malt.

Tastes sweeter than expected, based on the aroma. there is caramel and biscuit malt, spicy hops, grass, and citrus zest. This was most likely hoppy when fresh. I didn't know until I checked this site that this ber is retired. Since there is no date on the bottle, I had no way of knowing I picked up an old beer. Since there is no bottle date, I am going to judge any problems I might have with this beer as the brewery's fault. It should be mandatory to date all cans and bottles.

Medium to full bodied, with low carbonation. There is a lingering spicy hop flavor, from the Hallertau hops. Not my favorite Southern Tier beer. I'm not sure if it would have been a lot better when it was fresh?

22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Dusty and off a shelf today, havent seen one in years.

A: Pours a cloudy orangish brown with an off white head. Leaves some nice lacing on the sides of the glass.

S: An aged profile going on with this one, can tell it has mellowed out over the years. Malts are dominate with a bready aroma. Perhaps a touch of oxidation. Hops are in there giving a bit of earthy quality.

T: Nice flavors going on here, hops have held on well and add a fruity characteristic. Malts are solid backing it up nicely. Everything seems to have melded together here.

M: Medium to full body with mild carbonation. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Alcohol is nicely hidden.

Overall I'm real happy to have found this one. Had it many years ago and am surprised how the flavors have aged and blended together.

Poured into a snifter....

Appearance: Pours a hazy orange-amber color with a large, rapidly dissipating head. A swirl of the glass leaves moderate lacing which also disappears quickly.

Smell-This was my favorite part of the beer. The malts dominated the aroma. Smelled very yeast and very much of biscuits. Almost like a dog treat...but in a good way. It was also somewhat sweet smelling with moderate fruity notes (especially apple, but some citrus as well) and a hint of caramel. Very pleasing.

Taste-Malts were very much on the forefront. Sweet was the predominant flavor, with notes of caramel and fruits, such as apple and citrus. Some hop bitterness present, however, it seemed more of an afterthought and outweighed by the malts to the point of being unbalanced. It left a faint, bitter, slightly medicinal aftertaste. Finally, there was a faint presence of alcohol flavor towards the back.

Mouthfeel- High carbonation with and moderately full bodied. Noted a slight alcohol burn as it slid down the throat.

Overall- The best part of the beer was the aroma, which I absolutely loved! Alcohol was definitely present in the taste, and there was the slightest burn, however, I think it worked with this beer and was not unpleasant. The malts were very much on the forefront and dominated the hops to the point of putting this beer out of balance. That being said, one must keep in mind that this is a retired beer and past its prime, so some of the hop flavor could have faded. I'd wager that a fresh version of this beer would be a bit more balanced.
