Appearance: Nice pumpkiny orange hue to this beer when poured into a mug. The head rises quickly and dies just as quickly. Lacing is minimal.
Smell: Vanilla and sugar are the main aromas. This might be what an alcoholic sugar cookie might smell like. Other spice aromas are there, but in a lesser capacity.
Taste: Sugar and vanilla like pie crust, some alcohol, and a surprising hop bitterness. Hops really come out in the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Apparent carbonation, and a slight sting from the alcohol, but it's not much of an issue.
Drinkability: The alcohol content alone makes this a sipper. I'm not digging the taste/aftertaste, either. One bomber is more than enough.
Overall, I was rather disappointed with this beer. I had been looking forward to drinking it, and it did not meet my expectations. I was prepared that the alcohol content might be an issue, but the hop aftertaste ended up being the real cause of my disliking. The hop bitterness/aftertaste just didn't seem to jive with the style at play here. Maybe it's the variety of hops used that get me.
It is true that this beer has an interesting, unique flavor compared to other pumpkin beers. I would call it more sugary than pumpkiny/spicy. There are other pumpkin beers that taste much more like pumpkin to me. The sugar taste in front and hops at the back just didn't combine in a pleasing way for me.
