I was surprised by this beer. ST is generally speaking, one of my favorite brewers and they have done some amazing things with other styles. This one doesn't work for me however.
It poured ok. A pleasing radiant orange with a white head. Unfortunately the head receded to barely visible ring and left no lacing behind.
The smell at first blush was a bit tough. Lots of raw husky pumpkin. It gets a bit better further into the beer with some notes of cinnamon and vanilla coming through.
The taste is what really got me. Its full of, not pumpkin flavour, but chocolate and nuts, with an accompanying side of sugar and spice. What the hell? My last beer was a Post Road pumpkin ale and that one tasted like pumpkin.. this I don't know. Its a strange beast and the alcohol burn doesn't make it feel right. Very surprised its so highly rated.. but raters do love big beers.
Mouthfeel is fine. Drinkability poor.
