APPEARANCE: This doesn't exactly look like the beer that I know it is. The Pumking pours somewhere between straw-yellow and orange, but leaning orange. There is not much head and what is there evaporates quickly. No lacing.
SMELL: This is what pumpkin beer should smell like, pumpkin pie. Pumpkin, banana bread, cinnamon, clove, allspice and a hint of vanilla all pitch in to make this a wonderful smelling beer. I don't want to finish this because I want to keep my nose in it all night.
TASTE: All of the aromas come through in the flavor as well. The vanilla is a little stronger, there is some nutmeg and a touch of wood noticeable as well. The spices are strong, but the pumpkin most certainly comes through.
MOUTHFEEL: Light carbonation and medium body along with a medium sweetness make this beer very, very easy to drink. There is also no hint of the 8.6% here at all. Smooth and easy.
OVERALL: This is what other beers in the category should strive for. This is an exceptional beer, let alone an exceptional pumpkin ale. The best in class.

July 2014 - Bottle dated May 2014. This years model seems less sweet, with a slight hoppy bitterness. The aroma is still highly spiced but it does not carry with the dryness left on the palate. I was expecting/hoping for something a tad sweeter. There have been occurrences when I was told it was "too sweet" for some tastes. This version should bring those to the fold.
As for me, I'll wait until I taste some on tap.
A last thought: I assume the appearance earlier in the year, each year is to garner maximum shelf space in the seasonal aisle, but it's 90+ with high humidity today in NYC & just as I resist making pumpkin pies until the leaves start to turn, I think this may strike me more pleasantly in a few months.
08/20/13 On tap. This years model. I'm a big fan of this brew. This time around it feels a bit tamer on the mouth-feel and lingers on the tongue. Still a wonderful thing.
12/06/11 Once again, if it's on tap I'm not that far away. Whether it's from a hoard in the cooler or a fresh batch Rattle n Hum is on the case.
2012 Why I'm here today. This is a destination brew. If it's on your radar make a bee-line. Don't dilly-dally because it won't be there long.
2012 So glad to find this so late in the Pumpkin season. IMO this one gets it right. It's unique without being a side show novelty.
11/06/11 The 2009 vintage. BULLS EYE! This really hit the spot. Rarely do I order a second of the same brew @ Rattle n Hum because they have such a wide selection, but this one just wouldn't let me go. So. Tier needs to run this from Sept to March & then some. If there is beer in heaven, have 1 of the taps running this stuff.
