22oz bottle poured into a tulip.
Smells much llike a cold, Fall day. Brings back strong memories of Halloween and pumpkin pie. Not as much spice as in the other Pumpkin beers I previously tried and reviewed, but overall, I think it smells the best out of all of them. It poured a very nice ambers with medium carbonation. A bit lighter than the other beers, but with a 9% ABV, it certainly isn't a lighter beer. I have very high hopes for this beer.
Unfortunately... those high hopes are shattered upon tasting. From a brewery with a reputation such as Southern Tier, I expected something a bit better than this. I don't want to say it's... bad, but it is certainly on the lower end of the pumpkin beers I have tasted. Where I think this beer would benefit would be from the addition of more spices. One can taste the pumpkin mixed with the alcohol, but it's not exactly a pleasant taste. The Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale, for example, uses cinnamon and nutmeg to add robust flavor to the beer. The Southern Tier falls a bit short as you get a subtle hint of pumpkin, then alcohol, then nothing. For a 9% beer, you don't get much alcohol bite at first, but it certainly is the predominant taste afterwards. I have another bottle of this in the fridge, so if I have any additional thoughts after trying that one, I will add them here, but as it stands now, I'm quite disappointed with this beer...
Apparently this year is a bit worse than previous years, so I'm hoping I can try a vintage version of this...
