Southern Tier Pumking

Appearance: Southern Tier’s much-lauded seasonal pours a beautiful bronze. Unfortunately, this great-looking start is dragged down by a lackluster half-finger of head that cannot get out of the beer fast enough. There is a miniscule ring of very small, tightly packed bubbles at the top that accompany very small alcohol legs, a surprising find in an 8.6% ABV beer. There is also evident, active carbonation. The color is really great, but the lack of any head is a lack of half the presentation in an ale.

Aroma: Short and sweet: this smells like fresh-baked pumpkin pie, crust and all. It is remarkable what Southern Tier does with their emulating beers (Crème Brûlée comes to mind). This aroma is impossibly delicious.

Taste: One might make the assumption that the taste could not possibly match the aroma; one would be mistaken. This beer hits hard with cloves, allspice, cinnamon (which gives it the crust quality, along with what can only be assumed are biscuity and sweet malts), and, of course, pumpkin, along with the aforementioned sweet malts. It follows that delectable pie taste with a nice balancing of slightly bitter hops that mingle perfectly with the pumpkin pie and remind the drinker that they are not drinking a beer and not carbonated pumpkin pie batter.

Mouthfeel: Sadly, the hits do not keep coming. While the mouthfeel is not bad by any means, it is slightly disappointing. The carbonation is playful and does its job of spreading the flavors around the taster’s tongue. The beer is a bit watery, and some creaminess would certainly have helped a lot in furthering the bottled-pumpkin-pie-mix charade. Like the appearance, the mouthfeel is very average, and “average” hurts beers that are otherwise stellar.

Overall: This is easily one of the best pumpkin ales on the market if one is looking for sweetness. Those that do not like a sweet pumpkin ale need not apply. Southern Tier has done a great job bottling pumpkin pie as a flavor and aroma, but sadly fall short in the appearance and mouthfeel (the latter of which would really sell the beer). Still, taste is what beer is all about, and in that respect this beer is a runaway success. I could probably forgo making pumpkin pie this year and just buy a case of these instead. 15.5/20

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – Served a orange colored beer with almost no head. A very light film that is rather persistent does eventually fade leaving a light level of lacing.

Smell –Mostly of spice and pumpkin aroma. The cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice are complemented well with brown sugar, caramel and pumpkin aromas. Overall the spice is balanced by the sweet creating a pleasant liquid pumpkin pie smell.

Taste – A sweeter caramel and pumpkin flavor greet the tongue. While light in the spice department initially, soon flavors of all the pie spices that were present in the nose come to fruition. As the taste advances further the pumpkin grows even stronger while the caramel get replaced by some brown sugar and hazelnut flavors. At the end one is left with a satisfying semi-sweet pumpkin flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – A medium and smooth body with a lighter level of carbonation. The creaminess and low carbonation coupled with the sweet pumpkin taste and spice make it very easy to drink. While at 8.6 % there is almost no boozy taste making this very easy to drink.

Overall – A sweet delicious brew. Like drinking a smooth liquid pumpkin pie. While not one I would want with great occasion it is a perfect dessert beer for the cooler fall days.

Poured into a 10oz glass at Swig on Perrysburg,OH.
$6

Pours a clean copper. Almost looks like a watered down iced tea?? I expected it to be darker. Head is money.
Smells like a Fall Yankee candle. Spice is really flagrant-nutmeg, cinimmon, and pumpkin.
Well...it taste like a Yankee candle smells. Except it's really good! There is above balance of favors that ties it together to make a wonderful Autumn beer.
Medium feel with good carbonation.

ST is $!

Been waiting for this beer for a year now, as I fell in love with Pumpkin Ales last year. It did not disappoint and is now one of my personal favorites.

Very bronze almost orange color. No head or lacing when I poured it. Smell reminds me more of pumpkin pie scented candles and I get a little buttery caramel. Taste is where I absolutely dig this beer. I get more pumpkin than pumpkin pie but the pie spices are there. I taste the caramel too. Very well balanced taste. Very smooth and easy to drink, and I just can't get enough of the taste every sip. I could see someone not being into this beer or pumpkin style in general, but if this is what you're looking for you're going to love it.

Incredible. Unlike any other pumpkin beer. In a unique class of its own.

For starters, the pour is a beautiful, rich bronze color that appears to glow. The smell is sweet and intoxicating. The flavor is so wildly unique. From pumpkin spice to graham cracker to hints of vanilla, it is a true pleasure.

I know this is usually a hate it or love it brew, but put me squarely in the love it camp. As the pumpkin beer craze has exploded over the years, this sweet offering continues to be the one I look out for above all else.

Thank you once again, Southern Tier!
