03/06/09- Shared at a tasting with BA member Talisker.
Presentation- 22oz bottle. Did not look for a freshness date. Poured into a random pint glass.
Appearance- Peach-orange colored pour. Pretty clear looking. Some nice lightly creamy head of about two fingers. Leaves some light patchwork and lines of lace behind.
Scent- Quite a nice whiff of fresh tropical fruit. Pretty hefty nose of hops. Light toasted malt nose buried beneath.
Taste- Quite fruity and flavorful. Reminds me of not so quite hopped Blind Pig....with the power of a PTY. Hops are there, but very subtle. Not the harshness of many DIPA's. Really well melded. Alcohol does rear it's head a bit.
Mouthfeel- Very dry, ultra smooth and lightly sticky. Mouthfeel is very much like PTY. Lasting fresh hop aftertaste.
Drinkability- Really enjoyed this one. Has lots of great qualities. This would be a regualr purchase for me if it was available out here.

A: deep gold/pale amber ale - clear - topped with a full head of off-white foam; modest lace trails
S: muted aromas of citrus and tropical fruits; some caramel-esque sweetness
T: got some pine resin and grapefruit, toffee-sweet, earthy; not too bitter - rather moderate
M: decent carbonation, slick and smooth, medium weight, bittering close
O: decent, but didn't really catch my attention - seems like this "American strong ale" genre is rather amorphous - never know what you're gonna get - this had some DIPA characteristics, but was a little thinner in body, and even with all the hops involved, wasn't overpoweringly hoppy. An enjoyable ale, but lacking the allure to bring me back for another. Seeing as how my review is below the average, this may simply be a case of a style that, while broad, isn't (typically) to my particular tastes.
Saw two entries for this ale - hope I chose the right one.
