Had this one on tap, but I'm glad to see Southern Tier did away with that annoying wax seal on the bottled version. Looked classy, but incredibly ANNOYING when trying to open the bottle.
Pours a deep amber color with a thin lacing accross the top, active carbonation.
Smell is very spicy, citrus, and sweet malt. There's also some peppery notes, and the overall hoppiness aroma is almost juicy in character. I've had the botled version of this far more often but I have to say, the tap version is far more aromatic in nature.
Taste is orange citrus that runs oily and viscous-like, sweet malt, and there's a very nice harmony between the hop bitterness and malt. There's also a hint of pineapple or some other tropical fruits pushed way in the background. Mildly spicy and the citric/spicy bitterness lingers far after the sip. I've always enjoyed this particular beer from Southern Tier.
Mouthfeel is slightly prickly, but otherwise fairly smooth. Nice citric/malt/pepper finish and the ABV is not overly detectable, it's rather well hidden.
Drinkability is very, very good. The tap version, I could sip it all night, far better than the bottle. However, the high ABV will kick your butt so it's definitely one to sip slowly and make sure you have some foood before hand.

A: deep gold/pale amber ale - clear - topped with a full head of off-white foam; modest lace trails
S: muted aromas of citrus and tropical fruits; some caramel-esque sweetness
T: got some pine resin and grapefruit, toffee-sweet, earthy; not too bitter - rather moderate
M: decent carbonation, slick and smooth, medium weight, bittering close
O: decent, but didn't really catch my attention - seems like this "American strong ale" genre is rather amorphous - never know what you're gonna get - this had some DIPA characteristics, but was a little thinner in body, and even with all the hops involved, wasn't overpoweringly hoppy. An enjoyable ale, but lacking the allure to bring me back for another. Seeing as how my review is below the average, this may simply be a case of a style that, while broad, isn't (typically) to my particular tastes.
Saw two entries for this ale - hope I chose the right one.
