Got this as part of an excellent trade with jlindros who saved me a trip to Virginia to try to find some.. We don't get Southern Tier in NC so I was really looking forward to trying this one.
Dark orange pour with an ample off white head. Decent retention and good lacing on the glass.
Hops dominate the aroma and the taste. Grapefruit bitterness and just enough sweet malt to provide some balance and a pleasantly bitter long lasting finish. The balance is perfect. This may be an east coast brewer, but when it comes to hops they can bring it. I've had Hoppe and Unearthly and this really does hit the middle ground between the two.
Mouthfeel is actually lighter than you might expect, nicely carbonated but still with some syrupy feel on the tongue.
Easy to drink, especially for its strength. The alcohol is well masked.
A really fine beer. If Southern Tier ever gets to NC they will be getting a lot of my money.

A: deep gold/pale amber ale - clear - topped with a full head of off-white foam; modest lace trails
S: muted aromas of citrus and tropical fruits; some caramel-esque sweetness
T: got some pine resin and grapefruit, toffee-sweet, earthy; not too bitter - rather moderate
M: decent carbonation, slick and smooth, medium weight, bittering close
O: decent, but didn't really catch my attention - seems like this "American strong ale" genre is rather amorphous - never know what you're gonna get - this had some DIPA characteristics, but was a little thinner in body, and even with all the hops involved, wasn't overpoweringly hoppy. An enjoyable ale, but lacking the allure to bring me back for another. Seeing as how my review is below the average, this may simply be a case of a style that, while broad, isn't (typically) to my particular tastes.
Saw two entries for this ale - hope I chose the right one.
