Got this as part of an excellent trade with jlindros who saved me a trip to Virginia to try to find some.. We don't get Southern Tier in NC so I was really looking forward to trying this one.
Dark orange pour with an ample off white head. Decent retention and good lacing on the glass.
Hops dominate the aroma and the taste. Grapefruit bitterness and just enough sweet malt to provide some balance and a pleasantly bitter long lasting finish. The balance is perfect. This may be an east coast brewer, but when it comes to hops they can bring it. I've had Hoppe and Unearthly and this really does hit the middle ground between the two.
Mouthfeel is actually lighter than you might expect, nicely carbonated but still with some syrupy feel on the tongue.
Easy to drink, especially for its strength. The alcohol is well masked.
A really fine beer. If Southern Tier ever gets to NC they will be getting a lot of my money.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 2/24/2014. Pours fairly crystal clear orange amber color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fantastic aromas with awesome complexity of juicy citrus hops and moderate malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of big tangerine, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, citrus rind, pineapple, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, citrus rind, floral, grass, pine, light caramel, bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity of juicy citrus hop and moderate malt flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a smooth, lightly slick, and fairly crisp/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is an awesome DIPA. All around great complexity of juicy citrus hops and moderate malt balance; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A highly enjoyable offering.

Poured into a perfect pint.

4.0 A: Clear light orange color. One finger of frothy/creamy white head. Retention is lacking, but a half finger of lacing is left.

3.5 S: Floral hoppiness with elements of cat piss and herbalness. Malts are subdued, but pleasant. Grainy with caramel notes.

3.75 T: The taste in this isn't all that impressive, but it does drink so easy that that doesn't matter. Again floral hoppiness foremost. Some herbalness, cat piss, and woodiness. Grainy malts with caramel and a touch of breadiness.

4.0 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Pleasantly creamy and super smooth.

3.75 D: Overall a very pleasant brew. Quite pleased with this.

A dark golden beer with an off-white head made of mix of mostly compact and some soapy bubbles.

Strong citrus and pineapple smelling hops aroma with a light caramel malt aroma and light alcohol aroma.

Tropical fruit and citrus hops flavors dominate along with a strong hops bitterness. There is a medium-light malt sweetness. The alcohol flavors a subtle and lightly sweet when cold but far more pronounced and boozy when warm.

A medium bodied beer with a moderate alcohol warmth. It has a moderate creamy mouthfeel with a medium-strong level of carbonation.

A solidly bitter DIPA with a flavorful blend of hops that give is strong citrus and tropical fruit character.

A Beautiful light golden amber pour out of the bottle.

S Nice hop base. Gradation from dark to light floral citrus.

T Hoppy, but not overwhelming in depth. Lacking balance of sweetness and bitterness. Needs another more prominent hop note to give a better all around balance. Seems like a beer that would be awesome at the brewery.

M Exactly what you should be expecting from a 9.0%.

O I don't feel like this beer is worth the rating and the pricetag. Its a good beer out of the bottle, but nothing that I would go out of my way to acquire again. Southern Tier's 2XIPA is a better beer for value.
