Nice, big, black stout with only a sliver of dark red around the edges when held to a lamp. Two-finger, tan coloured head falls to about a half inch or so in about 20 seconds.
This smells like a chocolate bar. There are some dark roasted malt aromas in there, as well, but more than anything, this smells like chocolate. In fact, this smells, without a doubt, more like chocolate than any other so-called "chocolate" stout I have ever encountered.
Taste, too, is undeniably chocolate. It's a dark chocolate, though, nearing a burnt flavour. It is, however, unmistakably chocolate and absolutely fantastic. Seems to be sweet and malty with all the aggressive chocolate upfront and through the middle of the drink, turning a bit bitter toward the finish which is accompanied by a bit of a coffee flavour. Excellent choice of hops (Willamette & Chinook) means I can enjoy these dark roasted malts and dark chocolate flavours with out pine resin and grapefruit rind ruining it.
Mouthfeel is smooth and silky, but I must admit, in a stout like this, it could have been a little thicker for me. Drinkability is surprising to be 11%. I even drank this close to room temperature (it never spent any time in the fridge) and were I to have guessed without seeing the label, I would have thought perhaps 8% or so. Southern Tier did a terrific job concealing that 11%.
Absolutely fantastic; a wonderfully crafted American Stout!
