Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.
Appearance: completely and utterly black with a relatively thin layer (a thin finger or so) of frothy dark-tan foam. Good color, though more head would be nice.
Smell: rich aroma of dark chocolate with a light sweetness mixed in. Smells smooth and creamy. It's a bit one-note, but oh that note.
Taste: big chocolate up front which fades into a maltier finish. There's a small amount of astringency here, but it doesn't seem overly alcoholic. Hops are a bit vegetal, which isn't too uncommon in the style. The very end brings in notes of roasted malt and coffee. If you're in the mood for a chocolate beer, this will fill the bill.
Mouthfeel: big body with a good level of carbonation which leaves a nice creaminess; there is also an awesome silkiness here which I love. Excellent.
Overall: to me, this is a highly enjoyable beer. It drinks far easier than its 11% ABV would suggest. It's not blow-me-away excellent, but it is a highly tasty and competent beer.

This one pours a pure blackness that is dark as the darkest night with no moon or stars. There is a moderate thickness to the head that is rich and pillowy and tan that settles extremely slowly and leaves a shallow ring down the glass as opposed to lacing.
The nose is a fruity bourbon with notes of chocolate, coffee, anise, cardamon, vanilla, toast and raspberries.
The taste is very sharp and the alcohol has a definite bite that combines with the hops to attack the palate and dominate then gives way to a very complex smokey malt filled with a variety of flavors of smoke, bourbon, apples, bananas, coffee, chocolate, vanilla with a subtle peppery tinge in the finish.
The moutfeel is fairly creamy and the beer is a heavy one, especially for an American Stout.
Overall this is an exceptional stout that is very easy to enjoy. I found it went extremely well with some sushi.
