Super good stout. The nose is all chocolate. The draw is semi-sweet chocolate finishing with the smooth stout profile. Really like this profile of stouts.

Chocolate, chocolate, more chocolate, what's not to love? My wife had made a pan of double fudge brownies the day before I tried this and they smell exaclty the same (some damn good brownies). If your idea of chocolate flavored beer is that the twain should not mix, avoid the is bad boy. On the negative side, it's a tad thin for an Imperial stout. This would be heaven on Nitro.

Serving: 22oz bomber poured into a Samuel Smith’s pint glass

A: Dark, inky black pour that creates a creamy, chocolate milk colored head; looks viscous, and coats the sides of the glass; head retention, like on most high ABV stouts is reduced to a thin ring of creamy bubbles settling on the surface.

S: The name says it all – absolutely massive wave of chocolate aromas from the moment the cap is popped; sweet milk chocolate; gourmet dark chocolate with a bittersweet bite; homemade fudge; warm brownies; cocoa powder – like Swiss-Miss hot chocolate mix; flashes of vanilla; a faint touch of dark fruits, but really, the chocolate steals the show here.

T: Just when you think the beer couldn’t get any better after diving into its aroma, the first sip settles on your tongue. I’m gobsmacked. So. Much. Chocolate. It’s hard to believe this is beer because this tastes like the most decadent chocolate ganache dessert you can imagine in liquid form; huge sweetness from milk chocolate notes mingling with vanilla; rich fudge brownies; some deeper, bittersweet notes of dark chocolate (like a gourmet 80%+ cacao dark chocolate) are next in line, complimenting a roasted flavor reminiscent of cold coffee that grows through the middle - this is like mocha milkshake on steroids; the malts do come through with hints of caramel, brown sugar and a faint toast flavor, but the residual sweetness from the chocolate sweeps through like a tidal wave, pushing all other flavors back beneath the surface. Absolutely savory – bouncing from sweet to bittersweet, with enough malt and roasted presence peaking in between like intermissions in a symphony of chocolate.

M: Full body that is creamy, luscious, velvety; coats the palate; goes down very smoothly.

O: 10% ABV are you kidding? This is so supremely drinkable because the alcohol is hidden behind waves of indulgent chocolate. I know it’s there at the end of the day, with that slight warming feeling from within, but it never rises on the palate. Phenomenal. A beer disguised as dessert, or the other way around; surely this is the pick of the bunch from Southern Tier’s Blackwater Series, and that's saying something because there aren’t any slouches in that seasonal lineup of bold stouts. For my money, this is hands-down THE best chocolate-themed stout on the market, and well deserving of a place near the top of the list of the best stouts I’ve ever tasted. I would even go so far as to argue that this is one of the best non-barrel-aged American Double Imperial Stouts out there - it is relatively easy to find in season and you won't have to break the bank to get your hands on it. Try it - you won’t be disappointed.
