Served from a bomber dated 12/02/12. Bought the bottle over a year ago and have kept in the fridge since then.
Appearance: Black liquorish in color with a thin but thick dark tan head. A little lacing from the dissipated head. (4.00)
Aroma: Hershey’s chocolate syrup above a little dark malt bitterness. Mostly dominated by a milk chocolate character. (3.75)
Taste: With any flavored beer the main concern is too much sweetness or cloying flavor. My first impressions of Choklat are that of big flavor and good balance. Choklat starts with mild bitterness and clean dark malt. The finish marks a huge helping of smooth milk chocolate flavor, which lingers well in the aftertaste along with charred malt goodness to balance the sweet chocolate. The 10% ABV is extremely well hidden, however I should note that I’m drinking this straight out of the fridge so the temperature may be playing a helping hand in this case. Definitely a dessert beer. Mouthfeel: Thinner than I was expecting at just above medium in body with slightly higher carbonation than average beers of this style. Smooth feel all around with good drinkability. (3.75)
Final Thoughts: I’ve been holding on to this bottle for a long time and was luckily able to keep myself from hyping my palate up too much. Choklat is a fantastic dessert beer but what makes it great (the chocolate flavor) is also its main downfall because the sweetness can be cloying after only half a glass or so. I would recommend it to imperial stout fans and those with a sweet tooth. Would I drink it again? Sure, but I wouldn’t seek it out to enjoy by myself. (4.00)
