Thanks Mid!

Notes from 08/10/12
*22oz bottle to snifter glass

A: Pours the darkest shade of brown in color. Doesn’t look crazy thick but virtually opaque with a thin fizzy root-beer head. Low retention and some oily streaks line the glass at each sip.

S: Smell is a delectable assortment of mixed chocolates combined with the deepest, darkest, roast grains. A dash of vanilla crème and light alcohol notes round out the nose. Pretty awesomely rich aroma. Like wafting in some chocolate fondue.

T: Tastes like a chocolate fudge brownie. Amazing chocolate notes with a real pure cacao character. I get some lesser notes of coconut, licorice, and a bit of tootsie roll. Dark roast grains lend to a hint of coffee with some earthy wet wood. There is a light herbal hoppy kick that brings in some nice balance to the overall sweet brew. Alcohol is evident but not overbearing. Probably the most chocolate forward beer I have come across.

M: Feel is actually much thinner and lighter than anticipated. Still on the heavier side and very oily slick in texture but with a decent amount of drying in the finish to give nice balance.

D: A great desert beer to share among friends. I actually enjoyed this and found it more approachable than the Mokha.
The full 22oz was a bit much on my own so I made some killer brownies utilizing about ½ cup in the batter. Highly recommended.

I had Choklat in a tulip glass.

Appearance- This one pours a dark brown, and keeps that color with some streaks at the side of the glass. This is about as close to black as you can get. The head is impressive because it will sticks at a solid finger for most of the drink, keeping a mocha color.

Smell- It is a little on the light side, but man that milk chocolatiness is apparent. I like how the sweetness is not overbearing, but it is a bulls eye for chocolate.

Taste- The start of the drink has the milk chocolate flavor of the nose, but by mid drink there is some roast coffee grounds and earthiness.

And by the finish, a general alcohol heat barely peaks through, accompanied by a little dark chocolate. The flavors never fully come together, but it is pretty dang good.

Mouth feel- There is a good creaminess and smooth finish to this one, even despite the slight heat. Maybe it could be a bit bigger and stickier on the palate?

Overall- The nose gives hints of a fantastic milk chocolatiness. However, on the palate, the beer does not come together. The chocolate could be stronger and pervade the palate, without the roasted flavors and alcohol heat being so forward.

Review from 4/2010 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Chocolate aroma pours out on opening the bottle. Pours black with a small, fine chocolate head. Chocolate and sweet dark malt aroma. Chocolate with dark malts up front, an alcohol shot in the middle, finishing with chocolate and slight bitterness. Aptly named. Medium bodied with some creaminess. Another fine Southern Tier production.

A - Pours a dark black color with just a touch of brown around the edges and a thin layer of frothy chocolate colored head. The head fades down fairly quickly leaving behind some light lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of dark chocolate and milk chocolate with a bit of roast and some dark fruits, a hint of coffee, and some light booze.

T - Starts off with mix of bittersweet chocolate and some dark fruits and a bit of milk sweetness. Through the middle, some roast comes through with some more dark fruit and milk chocolate. The finish is a mix of bittersweet chocolate with a touch of roast, dark fruit, vanilla, and a bit of booze.

M - Medium full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth and a bit syrupy with a warming and sweet finish.

D - Very drinkable. Nice big chocolate Imperial Stout. The chocolate flavor is really rich and bold, but goes well with the body.

Pours black with a small bright brown head.

The smell is of the clear chocolate syrup used in cheap desserts.

The taste is terrible, the flavor of fake chocolate is overpowering.

The mouthfeel is pleasant. Smooth with a soft head.

Overall I think this beer is awful. I was extremely excited to try it but very disappointed. It's sister beer, creme brûlée, is equally awful... I love stout and southern tier but these were bad...

Served in snifter glass.

Appearance: Motor oil black with asoft head that comes off tan and disappears after a minute or so before taking a sip it was 1/4" at best off the body.

Smell: Before taking a sip you can tell it is a little sweet with hints of chocolate and malt.

Taste: Complex taste that is a borderline four and a half but I have had other double that raise the bar when it comes ot taste. Don't get me wrong it is good with its bitter chocolate feel and just a little sweet.

Mouth: Not sure what the IBUs are on this beer but trust me they must be high. Strong and subtle at the same time. Smooth and sticking.

Overall: This is good beer, not the best imperial stout but damn good. Salud!
