served from the tap in a pint glass.

appears an opaque black, with tan head, decent head retention. massive heavenly aroma of pure milk chocolate. taste is all chocolate as well, but not overly sweet or cloying, even after a whole pint. no booze at all in the taste. thick smooth body, easy to drink.

overall - Southern Tier does it again. Their massive stouts are all great. Have one for or with dessert!

Bottle poured into a tulip

A: Pours black and thick, not motor oil thick, but thicker than the average beer while a thin layer of beautiful dark brown fizz settles on top.

S: Aroma is intense with dark cocao and sweet chocolate, some caramel maltiness and even maple syrup. It's overbearingly sweet and I love it.

T/M: Very few bubbles make it smoother in the mouth and velvety on the tongue. Roasted malt bitterness are apparent at first followed quickly by chocolate malt and sweet dark chocolate throughout.

Doesn't taste quite as sweet as the aroma but offers a healthy balance between bitterness and malty sweetness.

Poured and shared with friend from a big bottle.

Appearance - very mediocre imperial stout. Nice super chocolate color but a very small head with little retention. Not up to par with other imperials in the look catagory.

Smell - putrid. Its not chocolatey at all. I can't even describe it, but every time I smell it its not pleasant.

Taste - incredibly chocolaty and more like bitter dark chocolate (which I like dark chocolate). Booze is well disguised but the flavor really doesn't work for me. Its more like chocolate flavored liquor than beer. I couldn't identify and hop presence to balance, no malty flavors or anything to complement of balance the bittersweet chocolate flavor.

Mouthfeel - full bodied I suppose

Overall - Maybe I got a bad bottle, but this beer just didn't seem well made at all to me. The fact that the rest of BA considers it world class, makes me feel I got a bad batch perhaps. Both my friend and I had to drainpour..it just wasn't pleasant. I've had several Southern Tier beers now, and most have disappointed. I'm not sure I'll continue to sample from their line.

A: Dark black with a nice bubbly head and moderate lacing.

S: Chocolate, and lots of it. The smell is dominated by rich dark chocolate aromas, with hints of a boozy alcohol character.

T/M: Lots more chocolate, rich and bittersweet. As it warms up, the alcohol becomes more pronounced, producing a nice balance between that heavy chocolate and the underlying booze. Very rich and creamy.

O: A nice, heavy, delicious stout loaded with chocolate flavor.

Live tasting, bottle poured into Duvel tulip...

Appearance; pours onyx black, absolutely minimal mocha colored head with a moderate poor, retention is abysmal, and the fraction of a finger of head vanishes nearly immediately...

Smell; WOW. This guy just jumped outta the bottle and punched me in the nose. I knew I was holding onto this bottle for a reason. Rich, deep, thick, CHOCOLATE. Smells like liquified chocolate. Incredible. The smell of this beer literally jumps out of the glass from a few inches away...

Taste; D.A.M.N. This is like liquid, molten chocolate, lush, rich German chocolate, no, Swiss chocolate... There is some slight hints of malt and a little bitter coffee (or dark chocolate perhaps?) on the finish but this beer is absolutely properly named, and is countless different layers of chocolate.

Mouthfeel; this stout, is in my honest opinion, perfect in this area... Lush, thick, viscous, and decently oily going down... Coats the mouth and hangs around for a minute or two... Absolutely brilliant. Carbonation is ever so slight, but a beer like this doesn't need much.

Overall; this beer is in my opinion, damn near perfect... The smell and flavor is amazing, superb mouthfeel... All around an incredible beer... Southern Tier, you continue to impress me!
