22oz bottle from 2011 poured into a snifter

A: Black water...as the bottle says. Thin dark tan head that dissipates to a pronounced ring around the glass. Very little lacing.

S: Semi-sweet chocolate. Actual chocolate...not the chocolate flavor you can derive from roasted dark malt. Also, grassy hops, some phenol alcohol and a little roasted malt.

T: Like a sledgehammer. Not overly complex. Tons of semi-sweet chocolate up front and then it gives way to a more traditional big double stout flavor in the finish. Way more roasted malt than the nose indicates. Quite bitter towards the end but I like it. Alcohol fairly well hidden.

M: Medium-to-heavy body. Silky smooth. Carbonation is average. Drinkability is moderate.

O: This is a beer that you have to be in the right mood for...but when you are in that mood it delivers big time. I don’t find it cloyingly sweet like some others...not by any means. It’s a dessert beer, but it’s also a big time roasty stout.

Poured from the standard pressure cap bottle into a Corsendonk tulip at low altitude. Expectations are high considering the reviews here.

A: Pours jet black with a three-finger tan head that fades rather quickly and doesn't leave any lacing to speak of.

S: This basically smells like a Hershey's chocolate bar. Sweet chocolate with some caramel malts in the background.

T: Semisweet chocolate flavor up front followed by caramel malts. There's some hop bitterness on the finish, but this still tastes cloyingly sweet to me.

M: Medium- to full-bodied with a wet mouthfeel. However, it's a bit rough around the edges and could definitely be creamier and smoother.

D: This beer seems grossly overrated to me. The ABV listed on the bottle was 10.0%, so maybe the recipe changed significantly from past years. While it's not difficult to drink, it's overly sweet and not very complex. With the quality of imperial stouts out in the market, I wouldn't buy this one again.

Thanks to NoSingsOfPain for sharing this one.

Look: Black with a 1/4 inch tan head and good retention and some spotty lacing

Smell: Chocolate just like the name says with a touch of vanilla

Taste: Chocolate brownies with more chocolate brownies. This thing is literally choclate in a glass. Good but after about 5oz its overpowering

Mouthfeel: Thick body mild carbonation and a bit sticky

Overall: A great chocolate stout. Probably the most chocolate forward beer I have ever had oh and chocolate middle and end. The chocolate just goes on for days.

Poured from a 22 oz. capped bottle (Bottled 12/28/11) into a snifter glass.

A strong pour yields a 1 1/2-finger mocha-colored head that fades after a couple minutes to a clumpy dusting and thick foam ring. The body is a beautiful black with no traces of color when held to light. Decent lacing can be seen clinging to most of the glass throughout consumption.

The nose can be basically summed up as chocolate, chocolate, oh, and did I forget to mention chocolate? Yoohoo can't hold a candle to this nose.

Milk chocolate starts with some very light hints of roasted malt. Upon swallowing, even more milk chocolate comes out with just a hint of lactose acidity and slight alcohol warmth. A light coffee bitterness is noticeable between sips.

Full bodied with moderate carbonation, this beer is silky smooth and easy drinkin'. The body is thick and sticky and just a little coating, like a melted chocolate bar. The carbonation is difficult to notice but is definitely doing a lot of work in the background.

Pours a dark, dark brown w/ an milkshake like 2 finger chocolate head. Not quite a black hole, but you can't see into it at all. Good lacing on the side of my CBS snifter. The nose is mainly chocolate and malt. Sweet smelling, and really smells like a milkshake more than a beer- thus the markdown from a 4.5. I like it though, just not as a beer- more as a dessert. The taste however, takes things up a notch. You get hops added to the mix, and that makes it just complex enough to get the 4.5 score. None of the 10% abv is evident at all. Not sure where they hid it, but it's non-existant in the taste. I really like this- yes, it's a dessert, it's sweet, but ultimately- it's very tasty. Feel is super smooth, velvety- but the hops still manage to pop through the malt. Overall, this might be a little over the top... but I still like it. A lot. I'll definitely pick this up again. Cheers.
