On Tap home keg system. Kegged date Sept 2010. Not the freshest for a Black IPA.
Appearance: Dark brown and almost black. Could really swear it is a stout and/or porter. Head was pretty prevalent even as beer was disappearing.
Smell: kinda imperial, kinda medicinal. Not the most pleasant smell.
Taste: Wow..starts out as very stoutish with malts dominating (caramel, some slight fruit & chocolate) then the hops kick in at the last minute to remind you this is not a stout. Smooth tasting and very hard to believe this is 9%abv. I had 2 before the 9% kicked in. It is that deceiving.
Overall: Really, if someone told you this is a Black IPA, you would swear this is a Stout. Southern Tier makes some very good stouts and this is a slight variation of....worth seeking out. Glad to have on tap. Enjoy!

1 Pint, 6 oz bottle poured into a glass.
A: I love the deep brown color. Medium sized head.
S: The perfect balance of toasted and alcohol scent.
T: A great black ale. Toasted malt flavor. Even a hint of hops in here.
M: Great mouthfeel. Not overly carbonated or too much alcohol.
O: I love black ales and lagers. Unfortunately, I don't see enough of them. I would definitely get this again.
