Poured a 650ml bomber onto my "spoiled rotten" tulip glass.

A: Dr. Pepper dark, hardly any light getting through. It poured a 2 finger head, light beige, that lasted an adequate amount of time, considering the ABV.

S: Totally confusing, yet cool at the same time. The aroma is piney, citrusy, and a bit malty. I also get some fall spices working in the background. I say confusing in the fact that, a porter-like looking beer should not smell like that...I call this a fun gotcha beer.

T: Grapefruit and malt jostle beautifully, this is exactly what I like on my IPA's or IBA in this case. I love the bitterness of the India style brews with the roasted malt, it's sweet and sour, it's caramel and citric acid slow dancing to a Michael Buble bolero song...my favorite!!!

M: It is medium to full bodied and palate cleansing at the same time. It is creamy and long lasting.

D: This beer is very interesting...kinda' like a Houdini trick, you see one thing, but you get another. Now, it is 9% so a better trick would be to stand up after a couple of these guys!!! I'm just saying!

Pleasantly surprised, and so far the two offering I've had from Southern Tier, have thoroughly impressed me!

Salud!

Pours a dark brown approaching black (but not quite there) color, about a finger's worth of head which fades at a moderate pace, few patches of sticky lacing on the glass.

Smell has a strong roasted/burnt malt aroma, hops aren't quite as strong but there is some pine lingering around.

Taste throughout is a mix of roasted malt and pine, burnt bitter aftertaste but enough sweetness to not be overwhelming, carbonation is medium with an average body.

Bottled 1/4/14 enjoyed 3/28/14.

A- Black with a slight brown hue. Clear. An off white one finger head putters out quickly to leave a light cap. Very little lacing at all.

S- Has a dank pine hop tone with roasted malts there too. Black licorice notes as well.

T- Dark roasted malts. A nutty flavor in there. Caramel with a little cocoa. Then some charcoal notes . You get a a warming alcohol feel starting in the middle and lasting well into the end. A complex brew, it throws alot at you.

M- A heavier brew, creamy feeling. Somewhat gritty. A meal in a bottle. Perhaps a little bit too carbonated. A couple few may be too much. More a sippin' beer.

O- This black ale is deep without being rude. Tons of flavor and feel from the dark side. Roasted malts mingling with a bitter hop backbone makes for an interesting conversation. And that ain't no lie. Good sippin' brew but could fill you up. Enjoyable.

Bottled January 6th and poured March 25th. $2.49 single poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass.

Appearance: Aggressively poured -- too much so. Got most of the beer in the glass, but a four finger soapy and creamy head stuck around for a bit. Iniquity is a perfectly clear mahogany color. There's a lot of lacing for this beer as well. Looks very nice in the glass.

Smell: Delicious. Outstanding. Awesome. Incredible. Really now. So much fruit and earthiness from the hops, it's pretty much insane. Massively hoppy. A lot of sorts of nondescript fruitiness and sweetness are there... just a sort of fruit cocktail of fruity deliciousness. The undertones on the aroma are all the earthy, piney, resinous hop smells. There is maybe also a faint hint of roasty character as well, but it's basically all about the hops. Going on three months old, and it smells like it was bottled yesterday. I'd love to get a whiff of this fresh.

Taste/feel: Holy balls. Alright, okay, that's interesting, let me gather my thoughts here. Okay. Wow. This is gonna be a long description. Rolls across the tongue almost tangy with some alcohol warmth and a bit of an alcohol flavor. The tangy and alcohol combination meet with the combination of fruity and earthy hops as well as roasted malt and make for an experience that, well, needs to be experienced. It's hard to describe what's going on adequately. I guess the tanginess is throwing me for a loop because it was so unexpected. The alcohol isn't well hidden, but it's not a problem for me here. There's a fair amount of flavor and warmth. A bit bitter, but there's also a pretty huge amount of sweetness on the finish as well. It's clusterfuck-y, yet it works. There's a slight belly warmth after the swallow, too. Iniquity has a pretty low carbonation, and about a medium sort of body to it as well.

Interesting beer that I feel I could easily pick out of a line up of black ales. That tanginess is unmistakable. For all I know, this beer is mildy infected, but whether it is or isn't, that little sort of funk is more than welcome. Bursting with resinous hops, a roasty character on the finish, alcohol that's not shy to show itself... a very interesting, enjoyable beer. Well worth the $2.49, because this was an experience worth having. Would have it again, for sure.
